Rector's Reflections

Who Is King Jesus?

Jesus' true identity seems to remain a mystery for most of the disciples. Jesus can teach, preach, heal, cast out demons, challenge authority and more, but still they do not comprehend. You might say it is a case of mistaken identity as the disciples and other followers seem to be hoping to discover something very different from the real Jesus. It is the criminal executed with Jesus who in his dying desperation says, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Clearly, the criminal has no other hope, still in this moment he acknowledges Jesus' true identity.

Modern followers of Jesus resemble those ancient followers in many ways. Everyone has their own image of Jesus, the gifts we want Jesus to bring us, the ways we want Jesus to fix those things in our lives that cause pain or suffering. In our anxiety we want Jesus to be our magical savior. It can be frustrating when we discover a very different Jesus. Instead of one who fixes everything in an instant, Jesus is the one who walks with us through the darkest valleys. Jesus is the one who calls us to lives of service-and again and again as we care for the needs of others we discover the face of Jesus himself in the lost, the last, and the least.

Our sin gets in the way, yet those who profess Jesus as Christ the King-the one in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell-are forever seeking to be clear in heart, mind, and soul about the true nature of his identity, and how we can share that identity with others. Wolfeboro Reads November Book

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER.
"You will not read a more important book about America this year." -The Economist
"A riveting book."-The Wall Street Journal
"Essential reading."-David Brooks, New York Times

From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America's white working class.
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis-that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.
Join us on Tuesdays, November 8th, 15th and 29th 4:00-5:30 pm at First Congregational Church Wolfeboro as Pastors Bill and Gina facilitate community discussion of one person's joys and struggles for dissection and discovery.

Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service
We will gather with area faith communities at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 22nd at St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church. The service will feature a large joint choir (Holly has details if you'd like to sing), the Rev. Gina Finnocchiaro is the preacher, and the offering will benefit L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry.

  Jim and Nancy Thomas

This week, as part of the series highlighting leadership at All Saints, the camera lens is focused on Nancy and Jim Thomas.  Jim and Nancy have been attending All Saints since 1978, when Nancy's mother, the late May Uthenwoldt, encouraged them to check out the new young rector at All Saints, the Rev. Randy Dales.  Nancy has been the Church School Director for over a decade. Jim is a member of the Vestry, and his term ends in 2018.  Jim is also an usher at 8 am services.
Choir

Our magnificent choir performed for the Offertory Anthem, All Creatures of our God and King.  The text of the hymn was written by St. Francis of Assissi, who lived from 1122 to 1226.
