One Iowa youth organization boasts of members and educational activities in every Iowa county.
The members, both rural and urban, actively invest in local communities through leadership and service. They spend time learning outside of school
--- and they love it.
In this organization, adults
--- some who have volunteered for decades
--- guide the youth as they explore the community and world around them. More than 10,000 volunteers are involved. Activities and membership are growing, reaching nearly one-in-5 young Iowans each year.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that the Iowa-based component of this national organization is affiliated with Iowa State University. As Iowa's only land-grant institution and a premiere university in the United States, Iowa State is integral to the success of the organization
Iowa State is home base for ISU Extension and Outreach, the parent/partner of Iowa 4-H Youth Development. Relationships built across campus make it possible for Iowa 4-H to evolve and grow as university research and education advances, and young people's interests expand.
Through Iowa 4-H experiences, youth find inspiration to reach their full potential while participating in local clubs, after-school programs, and regional STEM activities, and statewide events. Many are introduced to Iowa State's rich educational environment during events coordinated by Iowa 4-H.
- The state science and technology fair of Iowa will bring high school and junior high students to campus March 30 and 31.
- This year's Robotics Challenge, a product of a partnership with Iowa 4-H and the College of Engineering, has an urban agriculture focus. Teams will be expected to design, build, and program a robot that can accomplish a specific goal using LEGO Mindstorms© NXT hardware and software.
- Teens across Iowa explore the university and Iowa 4-H through a Latino/a and Native American perspective known as the Maize Retreat each spring.
- Each year, nearly 1,000 young people converge in Ames for the Iowa 4-H Conference where they experience Iowa State and build relationships that launch college and professional careers.
Did you know? Iowa 4-H is an ISU Extension and Outreach program. Its history dates back nearly 120 years!
