All Around Town | Everyday Learning
There are many skills that have become obsolete in the digital age; however, map reading is still an important tool for building children's spatial reasoning skills. Maps also help them make sense of their world. The skills needed to read and interpret maps are a part of visual literacy which includes understanding the image's intended meaning, evaluating it, and incorporating it into other knowledge. In this animation, a girl and her father use a simple map to plan and navigate their day.

Productive Struggle
"Please help me, I don't know how to do it," said Leo, a lovable first grader in our recent Odd Squad camp. The task at hand was making a mobile out of recycled materials to discover how weights and balance work together. Leo was typical of many of our students and the experience made me question how we are teaching our children these days. Are we telling them the answers or are we giving them the time, space and experience needed for them to investigate and learn for themselves? As parents and teachers, we are sometimes so focused on having our children succeed, that we forget that experiencing failure is a good thing. And is it really failure if you learn something? Productive struggle can be a great learning experience.
