Things We Love
Common Sense Media
As a parent, I sometimes struggle with the overwhelming amount of media available to kids. I have found Common Sense Media to be a super helpful tool when making choices about what to share with my family. Common Sense Media is a website (and app!) that provides ratings and reviews of movies, games, apps, TV shows, websites, books, and music for families. Parents can browse or search by title, format, or age. I have found it especially helpful when choosing movies for a toddler easily scared by overly mean characters, and to find apps I'm actually willing to buy. It's become a must in my parenting toolbox.   -- Jen Barth, Adult Services Librarian
Create 365
I'm a planner; I've always been a planner. So I've tried my share of planners, calendars, and organizing tips. I discovered my favorite planner by Create 365 wandering around Michaels. They offer large, medium, and mini versions with so many design options that I'd be surprised if you can't find one you like. If you are just that hard to please, they even have options to create your own covers. The planners come with monthly and weekly pages with plenty of space to write down everything I'm supposed to be remembering. Another feature I really enjoy is the ability to easily take pages out, add pages in, and rearrange them in any order I want. Create 365 even offers a special hole punch to make your own pages, and you can buy sets to add in, such as a fitness calendar, recipe planner, wedding planner, and home planner. I love this because I can keep everything in one place and am not constantly flipping between different calendars and planners. Also, if you want the little extras like stickers, sticky notes, and lists, you can buy a kit which is pretty reasonably priced compared to other planners available. If you're a savvy shopper you can use a 50% off coupon at Michael's and get an even better deal! I don't know about you, but I'm willing to spend $40 on peace of mind, especially if it comes in fun colors. Find them here at Emily Kleykamp, organization junkie and planner addict
The Book Concierge
Every year, NPR staff compile their choices for best reads of the year, The Book Concierge. This year's concierge is finally available. There are over 300 books listed in convenient categories that allow you to drill down to your specifications. For example, if you are looking for "Rather Long" "Mysteries and Thrillers", give The Mirror Thief, By Gaslight, or The Dark Days Club a try. To help you choose, they provide a blurb and a link to the NPR review. If you are looking for your next read, this is a great place to start. --Jen Barth, Adult Services Librarian
