A message from our Presiding Bishop, the Rt Rev'd Michael Curry

From the Rector

Faith is seeing. It's having what the Apostle Paul calls "the eyes of the heart." Our patron Saint Stephen, as he stands before the council that has condemned him to death,
sees  the glory of God,  sees  Jesus at God's right hand. Jesus, at the last supper, envisaging the horror and pain that lies before him, speaks of how those who  see  him, even in his suffering and humiliation,  see  the Father.
The Christian hope and the Christian challenge could be summed up like this: Jesus Christ lives and dies and rises from the dead simply so we can see what he sees and do what he does. Jesus seeing the Father sees the endless giving and outpouring that is the very nature of God, that eternal giving away, the emptying out of the self in love that is the beginning and ground of God's life. Welcome to a community which struggles, by the grace of God, to see and do what Jesus does, which is a very high, and humbling, aspiration indeed. See you in church.

Commissioning of Sunday School Teachers
and the Blessing of the Backpacks
This Sunday at the 10 o'clock

Sunday School at St Stephen's is open-enrollment, and this Sunday at the 10 o'clock service we commission teachers at the 10am service and inaugurate the Blessing of the Backpacks. Students of all ages - from pre-school through high school - will present their backpacks to be blessed by the Director of Family Ministry. Bring a lunchbox, a pencil box, something you'll carry to school with you every day. Parents are encouraged to bring their children so they may experience the support of the St Stephen's family as they begin a new school year.
After the 10 o'clock, register for Sunday School in Kimball Hall. Why not join us and invite a family that doesn't yet have a church home? Come out for refreshments, to meet some Sunday School teachers, huddle up to get a blessing for your backpack, and celebrate as a parish the kickoff of another great school year!
