A message from our Presiding Bishop, the Rt Rev'd Michael Curry
Here is a link to the Presiding Bishop's video:
Faith is seeing. It's having what the Apostle Paul calls "the eyes of the heart." Our patron Saint Stephen, as he stands before the council that has condemned him to death,
the glory of God,
Jesus at God's right hand. Jesus, at the last supper, envisaging the horror and pain that lies before him, speaks of how those who
him, even in his suffering and humiliation,
The Christian hope and the Christian challenge could be summed up like this: Jesus Christ lives and dies and rises from the dead simply so we can see what he sees and do what he does. Jesus seeing the Father sees the endless giving and outpouring that is the very nature of God, that eternal giving away, the emptying out of the self in love that is the beginning and ground of God's life. Welcome to a community which struggles, by the grace of God, to see and do what Jesus does, which is a very high, and humbling, aspiration indeed. See you in church.
Commissioning of Sunday School Teachers
and the Blessing of the Backpacks
This Sunday at the 10 o'clock
Sunday School at St Stephen's is open-enrollment, and this Sunday at the 10 o'clock service we commission teachers at the 10am service and inaugurate the Blessing of the Backpacks. Students of all ages - from pre-school through high school - will present their backpacks to be blessed by the Director of Family Ministry. Bring a lunchbox, a pencil box, something you'll carry to school with you every day. Parents are encouraged to bring their children so they may experience the support of the St Stephen's family as they begin a new school year.
After the 10 o'clock, register for Sunday School in Kimball Hall. Why not join us and invite a family that doesn't yet have a church home? Come out for refreshments, to meet some Sunday School teachers, huddle up to get a blessing for your backpack, and celebrate as a parish the kickoff of another great school year!
Father Ellsworth will begin a series of Rector's Forums in Kimball Hall on
Food and Faith: the Spirituality of Eating
. Select your plate of treats and beverage of choice and meet by the fireplace.
Starting today, after the 10 AM service from 11:15 until 11:45, John Hirten will be doing music with children ages 6 to 12. The main goal is to help them learn to participate in the Sunday church experience. In the process, they will also learn basic music reading skills and how to work as a group. We will meet downstairs in the large classroom (at the piano). The plan is to have them sing during the service once a month with the adult choir. Come on down!
