A Transforming Force for Good in
the World in the Name of Jesus Christ
November 2014

We start this month looking back at the saints who have made such an important impact here at FPC and in our individual lives. We give thanks for them and all they have done for us.   We will continue this season of thankfulness by dedicating our pledges in worship and celebrating with a potluck lunch on November 16.  May all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday later this month and continue finding reasons for gratitude.

As always, your feedback on the FPC e-News remains important!   So please let us know your thoughts on this communication vehicle or any other topic via email or using the tear off portion of your Sunday bulletin.

Grace and peace,
A Word from Pastor Juli:
"Seeking Direction for Our Congregation"

Right now the Session is seeking to discern the direction the church needs to take at this phase in its life, and I want to share with you three new initiatives that have emerged in our conversations.

  1. A couple of weeks ago Elder Dawn Troutman shared with you that starting next summer, Computer CORE will move into their own larger office space and Potomac Crescent Waldorf School will move into our education wing and two additional rooms.  Partnering with this independent and non-profit school for preschool and elementary children will build on the history this church has of having a school in its building, will raise our visibility in the community and will allow us to spend less of our income on the maintenance of the building and more on programs and mission.  We are excited about this new partnership!  Read on...
Communion Sunday Food Offering

This Sunday and every first Sunday of the month we are invited to bring our offerings of canned and non-perishable food items forward when we come to the Lord's table.   We express our gratitude for the grace we receive in the communion meal by extending the bounty of our table with others.   All donations will be given to ALIVE! for their monthly food distributions.

Session Update by Amy Applegate
The Session met on October 27 for our regularly scheduled meeting.  We discussed:
  • We are reviewing bids for some upcoming roof repair, fence repair on the playground and minor asbestos removal.
  • Our new website is coming together and should go live in the next couple of months.
  • The children's Christmas pageant is December 14, with a rehearsal on December 7 at 9:30. We will also be decorating the sanctuary for Christmas before worship on December 14.  All are welcome to come and help decorate.
  • The Spark and Feasting on the Word Sunday School classes are in need of volunteers to be aides. There is no planning involved, just a commitment to be in the class and assist the teacher as needed.
  • November 16 is Pledge Dedication Sunday. There will be a potluck lunch after worship. Please bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share.
Shhhh... It's a Surprise
Farewell Party for Charlotte Ross!

Longtime FPC member Charlotte Ross is preparing to move to a retirement community in North Carolina to be closer to her daughter.  Come wish her farewell on Saturday, November 8, 3-5 pm in the Fellowship Hall (but remember the party is a surprise!).  Contact the church office if you would like to contribute finger foods or beverages.
Pledge Dedication Sunday
Potluck on November 16

Join us on November 16 to celebrate our commitment to FPC!  The main dish will be provided by Glenn Spencer; please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

Pledge cards were mailed in October and will also be available in the pews on Dedication Sunday.  Please prayerfully consider your financial commitment to FPC for 2015.

New FPC Website
by Peter Pavilionis

Soon, Fairlington Presbyterian Church's website will have a totally new look!  Over the past few months, Elder Peter Pavilionis, Pastor Juli Wilson-Black and Romelda Guglielmo have been working with FaithConnector.com-a design firm specializing in church websites-to give FPC's website a sleeker and more colorful design, with better navigation aids. Currently, we're finalizing content, developing pages for new members, and updating pages for worship, educational, and mission activities and events. Keep checking your Sunday bulletin and the FPC newsletter for the new FPC website launch announcement.

Corresponding with the Corinthians
by Karen Tokarsky

Have you ever gone back and read a letter you've kept from an earlier time in your life?  Perhaps a note from childhood or a love letter you received?  It's a bit like opening a time capsule.  It was shaped by the events of that time and the audience to whom it was written.   Since 2 Corinthians is a letter or series of letters believed to be written by Paul to the people of the faith community he founded in Corinth, PW's study this month discussed who the Corinthians were and what was going on at that time.  Read on...
Presbyterian Women Fall Bake Sale

It's time to strut your stuff!  I'm not talking turkey; I mean showing off your baking skills!  PW will be holding a bake sale on Sunday, November 23 with the proceeds going to purchase additional stories and supplies for our newly revived Godly Play program for FPC's young children.  To make this event a success, we need delicious homemade baked goods and also hungry shoppers.  Please put on those aprons, and bake up some goodies for the sale.  If baking is not your strong suit, you can help out by purchasing someone else's yummy creations.  You're on a diet?  You could still participate by purchasing baked goods to share with neighbors or co-workers, or serve them to guests since the event is conveniently timed to take place just before Thanksgiving.  For more information, contact Karen Tokarsky (703-922-0815 or [email protected]).

Do Your Christmas Shopping at the PW Alternative Giving Fair on December 7
The Presbyterian Women are hosting an Alternative Giving Fair on December 7.  Purchase Christmas music CDs to benefit Living Waters for the World, Redeeming Grounds coffee to benefit farmers in Colombia, and make donations to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and local charities in honor of your friends and family (gift cards will be provided).  Stop by the parlor before or after worship on December 7 and make your holiday gifts count twice!

Save the Date!  Summer Day Camp for Rising 1st-6th Graders, June 22-26, 2015
