What an exciting time of year this is.... all the hustle and bustle of preparing for guests, and presents, and the PERFECT Christmas! Expectations are high! During this season of Advent, let's do our best to slow down long enough to realize that if we focus on the arrival of our Savior, it can never be anything but a perfect Christmas.
As always, your feedback on the FPC e-News remains important! So please let us know your thoughts on this communication vehicle or any other topic via email or using the tear off portion of your Sunday bulletin.

A Word from Pastor Juli: Great Expectations
"This is the irrational season
when love blooms bright and wild.
Had Mary been filled with reason
there'd have been no room for the child."
from The Irrational Season by Madeleine L'Engle
Each Sunday during this "irrational season" of Advent, we will be considering what Great Expectations God had for the world 2000 years ago. Your Session has also been considering what Great Expectations God has for our congregation today. Read on...

Communion Sunday Food Offering
This Sunday, December 7 and every first Sunday of the month we are invited to bring our offerings of canned and non-perishable food items forward when we come to the Lord's table. We express our gratitude for the grace we receive in the communion meal by extending the bounty of our table with others. All donations will be given to ALIVE! for their monthly food distributions.

Newcomers' Orientation (Dec. 7)
& New Members Class (Jan 11-25)
If you are new, you are invited to a Newcomers' Orientation on Sunday, December 7, 9:30-10:45 am in the Parlor outside the sanctuary. Stop by for coffee, meet some Fairlington Presbyterian members, and learn more about the church.
As a follow-up to the orientation, Pastor Juli and Lisa Miller will lead a New Members Class. Get a deeper understanding of the Presbyterian Church, meet some of the leaders of our congregation, and share your faith journey with others in this community. We will meet in the parlor outside the sanctuary at 9:30 on January 11, 18, and 25. Questions? Contact Pastor Juli at [email protected] or at 703.931.7344. |
Presbyterian Women Update:
A Month of Thanks by Karen Tokarsky
Fairlington's Presbyterian Women were truly in synch with the theme of thankfulness this month. We kicked off the month by co-hosting a surprise farewell party for Charlotte Ross in recognition and thanks for her many years of dedicated service at FPC before she relocated to North Carolina. Our next event was the Fall Bake Sale. Thank you bakers, shoppers, and dessert eaters! You made the sale a huge success. I'm delighted to report that $220 was raised for Godly Play, our new program for 3 to 8 year olds. In addition to supporting FPC programs, PW collected its annual Thank Offering which supports domestic and global mission projects such as agricultural development, economic justice, eldercare, health ministries, and others. Thank you for your gifts in support of these projects!
So what's next? Help decorate the Christmas tree in FPC's parlor! In previous years, the tree in the parlor had envelopes hung on it with the names of various charities (local and global). Envelopes were removed as a gift was made to the charities. This year we're putting a different spin on this practice. With mission as our focus, PW will be sponsoring an Alternate Giving Fair on December 7. That day you may purchase Christmas music CDs to benefit Living Waters for the World, Redeeming Grounds coffee to benefit farmers in Colombia, and make donations to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and local charities in honor of your friends and family. For each gift, you will be given a gift card and a bow to put on the parlor Christmas tree. As we show our love and gratitude this season, let's truly make that tree shine and sparkle as we cover it with bows! (Thanks to Mary Weber for making those gorgeous bows.)

Children's Christmas Pageant
All children and youth are welcome to participate in this year's pageant! There are speaking parts for youth narrators, and the younger children will be singing. Children will be able to choose the costume they like (depending on availability). Youth musicians are invited to play their instruments for the prelude, introit, and offertory.
Participants are encouraged to attend children's choir practice in the weeks leading up to the pageant, and to attend one rehearsal on December 7. Children who cannot make the rehearsal are still welcome to participate in the pageant.
- Dec. 7-- Rehearsal, 9:30-10:45 am, takes the place of Sunday school this morning.
- Dec. 14-- Pageant, 11:00 am service (no Godly Play this morning). Children practice songs during children's choir, 9:30-10:00 am. Sunday school continues as normal, 10:00-10:45 am.
Questions? Contact Dana Andy at [email protected].

Expanded Education, Worship
& Music Opportunities for Children
by Kelley O'Dell
This fall the halls and classrooms at FPC are filled with the voices of children in choir and classes well before worship begins on Sunday mornings. Opportunities abound for children and youth this fall and winter-and for adults to be involved with this thriving ministry, too! Read on...

Covenants -- Old and New
by Karen Tokarsky
What was Paul saying when he talked about God's new covenant replacing the old (2Corinthians 3:1-4:6)? Was he saying Judaism is replaced by Christianity or that Christianity is superior to Judaism? These are some of the questions PW circle members discussed this month as the study of 2 Corinthians continued. Read on....

Making an End of Year Contribution to FPC
The end of the year is coming, and we appreciate your remembering the church in your end-of-year giving.
If you are traveling this month, you may find it convenient to mail your check to the church or use your bank's bill pay system (simply set up the church as a payee and the bank will mail us a check on your behalf, at no cost to you). Gifts received by December 28 will be reflected on your 2014 giving statement. If giving stock or funds managed by a broker, ask for a transfer to be completed by December 26.
Thank you for your support of the mission of our church.

Visit the 2014 Alexandria Holiday Market & Help Support Hunger-Free Alexandria
Come out to visit the 2014 Alexandria Holiday Market December 5-21. This event is reminiscent of the European markets so well known in Germany and France. There will be crafts, wine and food for sale as well as activities for the kids.
Hunger-Free Alexandria will have a spot in the Volunteer Alexandria tent at the Market, and they are seeking volunteers from supporting churches to work a shift accepting donations of money and food. This would be a terrific way to show FPC's continuing support of Hunger-Free Alexandria and to enjoy the sights of the Holiday Market at the same time. To volunteer, please click HERE.
