A Word from Pastor Juli: "Home by Another Way"
January is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. This year, for instance, I am committing myself to getting outside and taking a walk every day. Have I made similar commitments in the past? Yes. Have I always stuck with them? No. But that does not discourage me. Even if I get in a week or two of daily walks before my resolve weakens, I will be the better for it. I will have established a vision to keep focused on, even if I sometimes fall short of it. Read on... |
Communion Sunday Food Offering
This Sunday, January 4 and every first Sunday of the month we are invited to bring our offerings of canned and non-perishable food items forward when we come to the Lord's table. We express our gratitude for the grace we receive in the communion meal by extending the bounty of our table with others. All donations will be given to ALIVE! for their monthly food distributions.

Presbyterian Women Update:
Rebuilding Community
by Karen Tokarsky
Taking stock of things at the start of the year is a long established practice. This year PW is doing just that. Our membership has decreased and yet we still aspire to support mission work locally and abroad. We're trying out some new things and giving a new spin to old favorites. The Alternate Giving Fair in December is an example of that. Instead of just putting up the usual Giving Tree, PW boldly asked our members to support several charities and they did! We received many gifts benefiting Living Waters of the World, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Heifer International, ALIVE (Alexandrians Involved Ecumenically), the United Orphanage and Academy in Kenya, and Presbyterian Missions. In addition, we invited Santiago Mancado of Redeeming Grounds Coffee to join us in order to promote and support his work with farmers in Columbia who have switched from growing cocaine to coffee. The Giving Tree in the foyer was covered with bows; each one representing an alternate gift and it was a beautiful sight!

Presbyterian Women: Chili Cook-off Are you a frustrated fan of those cooking shows? Do you think you make the best chili? Are you up for a challenge or eager to earn FPC bragging rights? PW will be hosting a Chili Cook-off while the weather is still cold enough to offset the chili's heat. The details are still being ironed out but start fine tuning your recipes now. This will be a family-friendly event with games and activities for all ages (and possibly prizes for the winning chili) so stay tuned. PW events are not just for women anymore! |
What are We -- Clay Jars?
by Karen Tokarsky
PW Circle members considered the role of the body and the metaphor of the clay jar in this month's 2 Corinthians passage (2 Corinthians 4:7-5:10). Paul talks about the body as a clay jar, a simple utilitarian household item which could be easily broken, yet held items essential for survival, health and well being. Read on...
