Bells in Church Usage
Bishop Paulinus of Nola introduced church bells into the Christian Church in AD 400, and since the Middle Ages are the most notable aural signifiers of sacred experience. Traditionally bells are used to call worshippers to the church, announce times of daily prayer, drive away demonic forces, and rung on special occasions as for a wedding, or a funeral. In Alabama farming fields, a sounding church bell signaled praying of The Lord’s Prayer. Saint Luke’s maintains a Ring of Tower Bells, from half to one ton and more, rung regularly both in single tolls and full peals at various hours of the day, also to announce births and deaths of church members. The church’s collection of now thirty-six custom-made hand bells was launched in 1979, were recently restored with the support of Episcopal Church Women (ECW). They are played both singly and in groupings for a range of liturgical-musical functions.
