Peace United Church of Christ
May 29 - 31, 2015
We believe in wonder and gratitude.  We practice extravagant welcome and curiosity and
celebrate our many, many ways of being human.  We strive for compassionate living and peacemaking in service with others.  When you visit, we hope you'll find a delightfully diverse, deliberately Christian, and decidedly progressive church!  Join us this Spring as we live into the Light of the Spirit...and grow together as a people of God...
This Sunday
Mendelssohn's "Elijah!"
The Peace United Chancel Choir
in Collaboration with the Cabrillo Chorale

Join the church community--with many others--as we celebrate the legacy and witness of the Prophet Elijah through Felix Mendelssohn's classic masterwork "Elijah"!  How does God use our lives to point toward better times, deeper hope and justice for all?  How do we stay open in seasons of loneliness and despair?  What can Elijah teach us about faith in our own conflicted time?  Be with us at 10:30, Sunday, May 31, for a stunning morning of music and power!

This Saturday, May 30th
Beach Cleanup

Join us at 10 a.m. at Moran Lake State Beach (East Cliff and 26th Ave) for an all-ages beach cleanup! Peace United has teamed up with Save Our Shores to adopt and care for this beach all year long. Join us for a morning of friends, fun, community service, and care for the world we love!

Making Connections in Community
LOOKING FOR HOUSING

Hello! My name is Rita Jones, and I am a graduate student at UCSC (in History), beginning my 4 th
year of PhD work. I am reaching out to the Peace United community in hopes of finding affordable and mutually beneficial housing in the Santa Cruz area. I love being a part of this church, and thought it would be wise to explore what possibilities it holds!

I am a friendly, peaceable, and incredibly tidy person - quite busy, active, and healthy. I would love to find a room or studio on the Westside (preferred), but realistically, anywhere between Davenport and Capitola, or Bonny Doon! If your space offers a bit of sunlight and maybe an outside bench for reading, I'm in! I would love to spend $600, give or take, as I'll be saving money to write my dissertation. (I'm also happy to contribute toward rent and/or trade by providing childcare, caretaking, housekeeping, yardwork, etc).

Please let me know if you, or anyone you know, has space to rent to an affable, 26-year-old, delightfully geeky blonde. I can be reached at [email protected], or by cell at 360.661.7919 (Puget Sound area code).

With love and gratitude, Rita.

PEACE ON JUNE 7
9:30 Community Worship and Communion on Cooper St.
11:00 Parade Through Downtown
All Afternoon at our Table

Once again Peace United is marching as one family, one community, one church--in the Santa Cruz Pride Parade!  Plan to worship with the whole church (including our choir and jazz band) on Cooper Street (next to the Museum of Art and History)--then march with us!

What a great witness, from all generations, for our church and our celebration of diversity and love!

After the parade, all are invited to visit (and spend some time at) our Peace United Table in the special Pride table area!
Sunday, June 7 with Peace United

Registration is Open for 2015 Peacemakers' Camp!

Children ages 6-13 are invited to join us right here at Peace United Church for our 2015 Peacemakers' Day Camp, July 13-17. Camp runs daily from 9 am to 1 pm: a half-day of stories, songs, crafts, games, and new friends, all in the name of...Peace!  Join us as we dive into the peace teaching from around the globe, explore spiritual practices that help our hearts and minds grow more peaceful, and imagine new ways to create peace in our world. Each day, guest musicians, artists, and peacemakers will be visiting camp, helping us enjoy all the many different shapes, sounds, and colors of peace!

Please note that this year, children ages 10-13 are invited to join us as Counselors In Training (CIT's). CIT's will work with camp staff to develop and lead camp activities each day, and are most encouraged to share their own special gifts and passions with our camp community!

Cost for camp registration is $50 per child ($40 per child if more than one child per family). Scholarships are available, and no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. To register, please complete a Camp Registration Form by June 30th and return it to: 900 High Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060.

FRIDAY, JUNE 19 @ 8 pm

Have You Visited Us?
If you have, your visit matters to us.  It's often strange to visit a church for the first time: to see new faces, hear old words spoken in new ways.  We appreciate your trust, and we eagerly await the chance to see you again.

When you return, there will likely be a name-tag with your name on it, a chance for us to greet you more personally.  Always, your questions and your curiosity thrill us.  Return with these, return with your whole selves...

And know that you are God's blessing.

Every day.

Who We Are...
We're an
congregation of the United Church of Christ--which means we take diversity seriously and we welcome all God's children as full and beloved members of our community.

We're part of
COPA
(which stands for Communities Organized for Relational Power in Action)--and in that way we work in solidarity with peoples of many traditions, bringing justice and decency to public life on the Central Coast.

We're decidedly
CHRISTIAN, and in the most inclusive, generous way possible.  We believe that--at its core--the gospel is a call to compassion.  And that's what we try to be about every day, every week.

All are welcome!

Making Connections

This Week's Reading

I would love to live
Like a river flows,
Carried by the surprise
Of its own unfolding.
