FROM GAYLE
Dear Ones,

The other night I was sitting with one of my sons, and he reacted to a story on TV, which got us talking about politics.  That is fairly unusual.  We tend to avoid religion and politics at my house in exchange for occasional church attendance.  But he started it, and so we talked.  And I was so glad we did, because it was calm, reasonable and thoughtful.  And that gave me such hope.  Any time we can talk about things with civility and respect, no matter what the topic, we invest in democracy and in our Christian values.  In this season of heightened rhetoric and plunging respectfulness, let's set an example.  Not shying away from controversy, but speaking with kindness and an acknowledgement of the dignity of every human being.

Praying for peace!  Gayle+

School Food Pantry Update
Starting in September, the United Way, Second Harvest Food Bank and St. John's (with the help of the Diocesan grant from ECS, Episcopal Community Services, and hopefully other organizations will join us) will hold a monthly Food Pantry at Taft School on the South Side.  Plans for a pantry at Williamson School have been put on hold due to the resignation of the school principal, whose replacement has not yet been named.
As part of our sponsorship of the pantry, we have been asked to supply four to six volunteers each month, to register families and help them transport food boxes to their car.
The pantry will take place on the third  Tuesday of each month during the school year, beginning  September 20.  The food will be delivered at  2:30 PM and families can pick it up between  3 and 5 PM
Please let Liz Wrona ([email protected]) or Gayle+ know if you can help with the pantry.  And let us know if you have questions too!
