    Soweto Art: From the Collection of Violet and Les Payne. 10:00a.m.-5:00p.m. Emily Lowe Gallery. This exhibition commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising - a series of clashes between black students protesting Apartheid policies and the South African authorities. Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, covered South Africa for Newsday and began collecting the featured artists' works during this time. Admission: Free.     Coming Soon Reminders

    75 Stories for 75 Years. 9:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. David Filderman Gallery, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, Ninth Floor. In celebration of Hofstra University's 75th anniversary, this exhibition, guest curated by Geri Solomon, assistant dean of special collections and Hofstra University archivist, is drawn from the University Archives collection, which focuses on the history of the University, and highlights 75 stories from the University's past. Through the use of photographs, original documents, memorabilia and objects, the exhibition tells the stories of William and Kate Hofstra, the University presidents, and Hofstra students, faculty and staff. Included are anecdotes and descriptions of events that many will have forgotten, such as: Who were the founding sisters of Alpha Theta Beta? Who were James Barnard, George Williams and Olive Plunkett? What was the concept behind Aymar Embury's design of the campus? For more information: (516)463-5672.

    Orientation Leaders Information Session. Orientation Leaders are upper-class Hofstra students who help plan and implement the Summer Orientation and Welcome Week programs. These students are responsible for helping incoming students with the transition to academic and co-curricular life on campus. During summer orientation, Orientation Leaders stay in the same residence halls and first-year students and lead them to sessions and give their perspective of college life. These are one of the most sought after leadership positions on campus.

    It's also one of the best summer jobs ever!

    11:00a.m. - 4:00p.m. Prospect Park, Nethermead(enter at 16th St),Brooklyn, N.Y. Snow is no excuse to sit inside until spring, so Winter Jam NYC is calling all New Yorkers to get out and hit the "slopes" of Park Slope (aka the Nethermead in Prospect Park). Representatives from Mountain Creek will offer free lessons for those who want to learn how to ski and snowboard; those who'd rather cross-country ski or snowshoe can do so at the Lake Placid Snow Field. This event also features the Red Bull Butter Cup, a snowboarding-trick competition featuring boxes and ramps (similar to skateboarding courses) open to the first 80 riders, both amateur and professional, who sign up.     Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade and Festival. 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Canal Street South (The parade usually winds throughout Chinatown along Mott, Canal, and Bayard streets, and along East Broadway.) The spectacle features elaborate floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dances galore, Asian musicians, magicians, acrobats and procession by local organizations. Over 5,000 people are expected to march in the parade, which will start at Mott Street and promenade through practically every street in of Chinatown, finally dispersing at Worth Street. The parade is expected to conclude at 3 pm, at which time an outdoor cultural festival will take place on Bayard Street featuring more performances by musicians, dancers and martial artists.
