Steampunk
Haunted House Abrons Art Center at the Henry Street
Settlement, 466 Grand Street, New York, NY 10002 The Abrons
Arts Center gets into the Halloween spirit with the return of the
Steampunk Haunted House, a highbrow, low-tech scarefest grounded in
the steampunk aesthetic as imagined by award-winning performance
group Third Rail Projects. The grinding horror of man-machines
meets Victorian science fiction (pre-industrial robots!) in the
subterranean catacombs of this early 20th-century building.
Admission: $10-$25; for more information, visit
thirdrailprojects.com.
Psycho:
50th Anniversary Screenings. October 29 - November 4,
201. 1:00pm. Film Forum, 209 W. Houston St. Manhattan, NY
10014. It set an entirely new standard for suspense, horror and
about a dozen other genres, and half a century later, its legend
continues to grow. Psycho-considered by many to be director Alfred
Hitchcock's finest hour- first arrived in theaters in 1960, and in
honor of its 50th anniversary, New York's Film Forum is bringing it
back for a weeklong run (with Halloween screenings conveniently
included). Don't miss your chance to see this all-time classic the
same way those original stunned audiences once did. For more
information, visit filmforum.org.
Saturday,
October 30th, 2010
Dead
of Night. 2:00p.m. The Film Society at Lincoln Center.
165 W 65th St (between Broadway and Amsterdam Ave).
Supernatural stories by various authors-H.G. Wells, E.F. Benson,
John V. Baines-were adapted for this film's collection of chilling
vignettes, linked by Dearden's central tale. Restrained yet eerie,
it's an effective journey through cinema's dark
side.
Creepshow
at the Freakshow. 5:00p.m. Coney Island USA, 1208 Surf
Ave (at W 12th St). As you creep through the haunted house,
you'll see amusement park crime scenes, which include a collapsed
roller coaster, decapitated bodies and plenty of zombies;
participate in the ghoulish trial of the negligent ride inspector.
Admission: $10. For more information (718) 372-5159 or
coneyisland.com.
Floating
Kabarette. 10pm. Galapagos Art Space, 16 Main St (at
Water St). Galapagos reclaims the circus with this recurring
cabaret night, featuring a rotating cast of performers. Expect
burlesque, magic, trapeze and more-all hosted by potty-mouthed
performance-art duo Olga and Bjorn. Admission: $5 (First 25 people
FREE!) For more information (718) 222-8500 or
galapagosartspace.com.
Sunday,
October 31st, 2010
Village
Halloween Parade. Sixth Ave from Spring St to W 21st
St. The Village Halloween Parade had humble beginnings back in
1973, as neighborhood children in the West Village walked from
house to house with their friends. Over the years it's become a
massive party with wildly costumed characters, puppets, bands,
dancers and about two million spectators. Don't let the crowd scare
you off-this is a lively NYC tradition you won't want to miss. For
more information: halloween-nyc.com.
