Dear Saxe Gotha Family,
In February, I accompanied the Trinity South Sudan medical and theological mission team to the Rhino and Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement Camps located in northwest Uganda. The doctor and three nurses with the medical mission team served over 500 South Sudanese Refugees and provided 400 people with reading classes. The theological team distributed Talking Bibles, translated into various languages, to South Sudanese Pastors from multiple denominations within the settlement camps. Trauma healing seminars were also conducted for the Pastors who are personally struggling with violence and atrocities that they have witnessed. With this vital assistance, they can begin helping their own congregations deal with the trauma inflicted upon them and begin the healing and reconciliation process.
With the generous support from Saxe Gotha's Change for Sudan ministry, I purchased a chlorine generator, bleach maker and supporting equipment for the use of purifying and sanitizing water at the refugee settlement camps. I trained the refugees and camp personnel to set up and operate the chlorine generator in order to treat rainwater captured in cisterns at both settlement camps. Use of the chlorine generator in one village alone will increase the potable water capacity by a factor of five to 50,000 gallons per day. Utilizing additional chlorine generators will have a significant impact, since there are limited water sources for the 300,000 South Sudanese refugees who have fled to the Ugandan settlement camps (an average of 4,000 people per day since August 2016). Personnel at both camps are buying large quantities of bleach, so they were excited to discover how to make their own with the bleach maker. The bleach will disinfect water storage tanks and jerry cans used for carrying water.
Thank you again for your support and I look forward to sharing more during our Change for Sudan collection on March 24th.
In Christ's love,
