Dear Fellow Servants of Jesus Christ, Jim casual 8-2014

This weekend you will be robbed! That's right! Every single person in our congregation will be robbed one precious hour of sleep! And we will be asked to cover up this crime by moving our clocks ahead Saturday night as we "spring forward!" Please don't forget, or you will be late for church!

The change to Daylight Savings Time causes me to think about the nature of time. Time management experts remind us that we can't make time - we can only use time. And this of course raises the question of stewardship, "How do I use the time that God has entrusted to me?"

Paul encouraged the Christians in Colossae to "make the most of every opportunity" (Colossians 4:5). This phrase literally means, "buy up the time." We are to buy back the time from Satan and apply it to furthering the kingdom of God.

The word "time" is important here. The New Testament uses two words for time. The first is "chronos" in which we get the word "chronological." It is sequential time or calendar time. The second is "kairos" which is an appointed time. In the Bible, there is an appointed time for the purposes of God.

Please reflect on this: Our days contain "kairos" - appointed time for the purposes of God. The question is not whether we have these moments. The question is whether we use them. Do we look for opportunities to share the love and good news of Christ in our words and deeds? Do we seize these moments for the kingdom of God?

You see, the Christian life is an adventure. God sets before us opportunities - kairos moments -- to further his kingdom by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ through our words and actions. Let's us make the most of every opportunity to invite others into a relationship with God through his Son Jesus.

In Christ's love,
Pastor Jim
