Madison E. Lipsig to Become a Bat Mitzvah
Saturday, May 20, 10:30 AM

This Saturday, Maddi Lipsig will be called to the Torah to become a Bat Mitzvah. Maddi is an 8th grader at the Pacific Grove Middle School where she has participated in the STEAM program, orchestra, and maintained a 3.5 or above GPA.

Maddi has a passion for dance. She has participated in the DiFranco Dance Project since third grade. She, along with her fellow dancers, have performed annually at various local events including First Night Monterey. Feast of Lanterns, and Pacific Grove Good Old Days. In 2015 Maddi was honored with Dancer of the Year by Ms. Dianne Lyle, the founder and instructor of the DiFranco Dance Project. This year, along with moving into Afro Latin Jazz Level 3, Maddi also volunteers weekly to work with the youngest of the DiFranco dancers, four and five year olds!

For her Mitzvah project, Maddi will be contacting her connections at Monterey SPCA to find out what it is they need and how she can be of assistance towards meetting that need.

Maddi has a smile like sunshine and when she turns it on you there is sensation of light and warmth.  She has an awesome sense of humor and an open friendly attitude. Her family is so proud of her for her decision, at 10 years old, to begin her Hebrew studies and her dedication to continue the process in becoming a Bat Mitzvah.

Shavuot Celebration
Tuesday, May 30 6:00 PM

Shavuot, our summer pilgrimage festival celebrates the last harvest of the year on Israel's agricultural calendar.  Biblically it is also the time when our ancestors received the Revelation at Mount Sinai.  Arriving seven weeks after Passover, our Shavuot observance this year will be held on Tuesday evening, May 30 outdoors around a campfire.  We will gather at 6:00 PM when Alisa will start us off with singing.  Rabbi Greenbaum will share a Shavuot story  we will also study together.  Those attending are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner for themselves and desserts to share.  We will gather for our campfire in our beautiful CBI back yard.

broadway-theater.jpg Summer Fun at the Theater

Last summer many CBI members relaxed and were entertained as together they enjoyed some of our local theater. Let's do it again! We have reserved tickets (at discounted rates) for 4 shows in the next two months. We will gather at the Golden Bough Theater on Saturday evening, July 1 for the 7:30 performance of "Peter and the Starcatcher." This fun prelude to Peter Pan is great for all ages. Our discount ticket prices are: adults $35, seniors $28, teachers and military $16, students $12, and children under twelve $8. So that we can keep these discounted prices PLEASE RSVP to CBI for this show by June 16.

We have three more theater events lined up for July and August.  More information on the upcoming shows will be in the June Shofar newsletter and future e-bulletin announcements.
