NOVEMBER 28, 2016 - IN THIS ISSUE
#GIVING TUESDAY
I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I enjoyed a restful break with my family, and I am prepared (preparing?!) for the arrival of December later this week. It is hard to believe that we have reached that point in the school year already!

Since we just returned from break, I am going to keep this enewsletter short, but with some very important announcements. We have also decided to rerun some of last week's articles, in case you missed something before the holiday.

1) Hot on the heels of Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, we hope you will help the school celebrate
#GivingTuesday
beginning tomorrow. In case you haven't heard, #GivingTuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. Charities, families, businesses, community centers, students, and more from around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

At Charlotte Lab School, we plan to come together for the holidays to help our families in need and provide food and goods, such as holiday meals, shoes, warm clothing, groceries, and gas money. If you would like to support the CLS community and participate in #GivingTuesday by donating gift cards for our families, please sign up to help here. You may send gift cards to the front office and ask for a donation receipt if you would like one. We will be collecting gift cards through next week. Thank you in advance for your support.

2) I also want to let you know that Vikki-Rose Tunick will be having surgery this Friday 12/2 and will be out on medical leave for two weeks for recovery. Meg Scott will be coming out of the classroom and covering Vikki's schedule during this time (meetings, instructional walkthroughs, scheduling, testing), and Mandy May will be substituting for Meg's classes & Vikki's advisory. I know that you all join me in wishing Vikki a speedy recovery, and you can feel free to send get well messages to her via email or the school. If you are interested in providing some extra help for her family, please email Susannah Lund who will be organizing meal delivery for the Tunick family during these few weeks.

3) Finally, please take a moment to complete our Parent Survey and provide feedback on your family's experiences the first 50 days of school. So far, only 35 people have responded, and we would love to hear from more of you!

We are looking forward to a great week; watch out December, here we come!

Sincerely,
Mary Moss Brown
Head of School
PARENT SURVEY - LAST CHANCE
We have finished our first quarter, and we invite you to spend a few minutes reflecting on the first 50 days of school. As you know, the role of parents is a critical one, and we need your insight, feedback, and suggestions in order to plan ahead and make improvements in our curriculum, program, and structures. Please compete the online survey by Dec 5
DEC 10 MOVIE & HOLIDAY MARKET
Ready to drop off the kids, do a little shopping, have fun, and maybe even win some awesome prizes? Then join us for the Charlotte Lab School Movie & Holiday Market on Saturday, December 10 from 3-5:00 pm at UNCC Center City (right across the street from school).

This FREE event is a great time to drop-off your kids for a special screening of Disney's Cool Running's while you enjoy time to visit with other Lab School parents and shop at our Holiday Market.  Simply register here to get your free movie tickets . This will also help us ensure we have enough volunteers to watch the children.

We have so many great vendors and prizes lined up. Keep your eyes open for a flyer in this week's Friday folders. And, every family that attends will receive a free raffle ticket (additional tickets available for purchase) and a chance to win wonderful prizes. Our silent auction and vendors will help raise money for the school. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please email Kess Clark  for more information.
CLASS PICTURES TOMORROW
Don't forget, we are retaking the homeroom class pictures tomorrow, Tuesday November 29. All parents will receive a free 4x6 class picture in about two weeks thanks to our fabulous photographer Mandy French.
NEED A HELPING HAND FOR THE HOLIDAYS?
With the holidays upon us, we know that for many families, this time of year can be very stressful. And, we would like to provide some extra help for families who need it. The community is coming together to provide holiday dinners, uniforms, warm clothing, and other basic goods to ease the stress. If your family would like a little extra help over the winter break, just send us an email and we will be in touch. (You do NOT need to have completed the financial assistance process to participate.)  Food and goods will be distributed on Dec 22.
PTSO GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND MIDDLE SCHOOL NIGHT
The second PTSO General Meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 6 from 6:00-7:00 pm. The agenda will include the following:

  • Used Uniform Sale and Spirit Wear Sale
  • After the PTSO meeting, beginning at 7:00 pm, Dr. Moss Brown will share a special presentation about our plans for Middle School next year. This is a parent event for current Lab families only.
If you need childcare, please RSVP to  [email protected]  and indicate the # of children you'll drop off. Space is limited so please RSVP by Wednesday, November 30. The cost for each child is $5 (cash only, please) and healthy, nut-free snacks will be served (if your child needs more, please send it). Look out for an update on parking in next week's enewsletter.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteers for Dec 10 Movie Event
We are looking for parent volunteers to help watch the kids during the  movie. There will be 3 shifts of approximately 40 minutes each, so you will still  have time to shop and mingle with other parents. Sign up here.

Volunteers with Holiday Spirit!
Volunteers are needed to help with the Used Uniform tables at the December 6th General PTSO assembly meeting. We could also use your help to sell Spirit Wear at the Holiday Movie & Market on December 10th.  Please consider helping and sign up today. Thank you for supporting the Lab School!

Open House Volunteers Needed Nov 29
We will have another Open House for prospective kindergarten parents coming up on Tuesday November 29 from 6:00-8:00 pm.  If you are interested in volunteering to help welcome prospective families and answer questions about your family's experience at Lab, please sign up here. If you have never helped out at an open house before, don't worry!  We will go over basic talking points together beforehand, it will be a lot of fun.
A WORD ABOUT UNIFORMS
As the weather gets colder, we thought it would be a good time for a reminder about a few aspects of our uniform policy.  Students may wear any color jacket, hat, gloves etc. to go to/from school, but while in the building, any outerwear (sweatshirts, sweaters, jackets etc.) must be solid navy blue. (A small logo is okay.) Additionally, students may wear boots to school, but must change into sneakers as soon as they arrive.

A complete version of the CLS Uniform Policy is detailed in the family handbook. If you have any questions regarding uniform compliance or need assistance obtaining a necessary piece of the uniform, please contact Melissa Markle at [email protected] or (980) 999-0032

Beginning this week, students will be unable to earn their "A" for any class period that they are out of uniform.
