FEBRUARY 27, 2016 - IN THIS ISSUE
YOU'RE INVITED
Dear Parents,

The third-quarter PTSO General Membership Meeting will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, February 28 from 6:00-8:00 pm. All are welcome, and I hope that parents will make every effort to attend. I am especially excited about this meeting because we have several guest speakers lined up based on feedback from families on topics that you would like to hear more about.

The agenda includes the following:
  • Social Media/Technology Presentation with Dee Lanier
  • Discipline Policies and Systems with Melissa Markle
  • Roles and Responsibilities of the CLS Board with a Board Chair Tom Murray and Vice-Chair Andy Culicerto
  • Blessing Box Campaign Update
  • PTSO Finance Update
  • 2017-18 PTSO Volunteer Interest/Opportunities
  • Spirit Wear Sale
Note that free parking is available at the Hal Marshall Annex. See Feb 6 enews for more information.

I also want to take a moment to thank this year's PTSO Executive Board. I am so proud of everything that this group (and many, many committee members) has accomplished this year. We would not have such a strong community without these dedicated volunteers. Please join me in recognizing the following i ndividuals:
  • President Bruce Long
  • Vice President Tracey Rosenberg
  • Treasurer Corinne Connor
  • Assistant Treasurer John Bezanson
  • Secretary Rich Holmes
  • Co-Audit Chairs Stephanie Briggs Evans & Catherine Malone
  • VP of Fundraising Kess Clark
  • VP of Marketing and Communications Nola McClure
  • VP of Parent and Student Events Sue Hawes
  • VPs of Student Recruitment Shanna Hill & Megan Stuhlman
  • VPs of Nominating Committee Kristin Allen & Ricky Singh
Believe it or not, it will soon be time to fill these board positions for the 2017/18 school year, as well as to find new committee chairs, so please consider volunteering for any one of these important roles. A sign-up sheet will be sent home on Friday and will be included in next week's enews. We rely on the PTSO to help in so many ways. If you are not already involved, I encourage you to consider giving time to support our school community.
Sincerely,

Mary Moss Brown

WELLNESS UPDATE FROM MRS. WHELAN
The Charlotte Lab School community will spend the week of February 27 with a Mindfulness Challenge for students, staff, and parents. Everyday staff and students will have multiple mindfulness experiences in their morning meeting, classes, and advisory. In addition, each grade level will create a Mindfulness display for the week. Students will have many opportunities to practice mindfulness
throughout the day, as a way to stay calm and focused.

It is our hope that families will also find ways to integrate mindfulness at home as well. Please use the resources below as a way to incorporate mindfulness with students outside of school.
Feel free to share your experiences with me;  I look forward to seeing and hearing from our students and parents throughout this Mindfulness Challenge.

LAST CHANCE TO COMPLETE THE DIVERSITY SURVEY
Do you keep intending to complete the Diversity Survey but haven't found the time? This is your last chance to share your thoughts. Surveys must be completed by the end of the day tomorrow. If you haven't done so already, please complete the online survey or return the hard copy that was sent home in your child's green folder a few weeks ago.
DON'T FORGET ABOUT PI DAY
Hopefully you saw last week's enewsletter announcing our new partnership with local, big-data firm Tresata. To kick off this exciting relationship, we invite families to join us for a PI Night event on March 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Parents and students will enjoy a one-of-a-kind Mime-matics presentation by Dr. Tim Chartier, professional mime and mathematician; math games; and a pizza dinner, all sponsored by Tresata. Please save the date. RSVP information will be included in next week's enews.
SPIRIT WEAR VOLUNTEER NEEDED
We need a volunteer to help sell Spirit Wear at the PTSO General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, February 28. Volunteers should arrive at 5:30 pm to help set up. Please email Mandy French if you can volunteer on this day. She will provide the details. Thank you for supporting the PTSO @ CLS!
RAISE MONEY WHILE YOU SHOP
Lab School is participating in TeaCollection's School Days fundraiser from 2/27 - 3/6. What does this mean? You get to shop globally inspired children's clothing on TeaSchoolDays.com, use code  SDS17CHARLOTTELAB  for 15% off your order + free shipping, and 15% of your order gets donated back to us. Our school also has the chance to win an additional $100 by raising the most funds, so please help spread the word.

Speaking of shopping, don't forget to use Amazon Smiles for all of your Amazon purchases. Did you know that 0.5% of eligible purchases comes back to Lab. Working together, it adds up to $500/year. And the more people who use this link, the more money we will raise. It is simple to get started. Begin your shopping at  www.smile.amazon.com, and select Charlotte Lab School as your charity. It is that easy! Be sure to tell your friends and family.
SPRING EVENTS - COMING SOON
The dates for our spring events are set: the Girls Spring Fling is Friday, March 24 and the Boys Glow Show is Friday, March 31. Each event will take place from 6:30-8:30 pm and includes a DJ and dancing, photo booth, glow sticks, treats, and a picture with your special someone. These events are designed for students to invite a special someone (mom, dad, aunt, uncle, grandmother, grandfather, or another adult) to join them and spend a fun evening together. Keep your eyes open for flyers and sign-up info in green folders this Friday.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Committee Chair Sue Hawes.
SOCIAL MEDIA SOLUTIONS
Are you looking for help with how to keep social media and smartphones from controlling your child? If so, join us for an educational evening with guest speaker Melanie Hempe from Families Managing Media. We had great feedback when Melanie hosted our Wired Child book club, and we are excited to have her return for this evening event titled ReThinking Screens. ReClaiming Kids. ReConnecting Families.

Date: Monday, March 6
Time: 6:00-7:30 pm

There is no charge for this event. Donations are welcome. More information can be found here.

LAB INNOVATION FUND - FIRST MONTH'S GOAL

Keep your eyes open next week for a full report on our first month's successes. You can learn more about the Lab Innovation Fund  on our website, including  Ways to Give and answers to Frequently Asked Questions .

The World Languages team is requesting photos of students and families that represent your culture. Please send in a photo (hard copy or digitally to [email protected]) that includes your student and a product or practice that represents your culture. These do not necessarily need to be related to a particular heritage or nationality; we would love to know about your family or community's culture, too!
  • PRODUCTS could include anything that a group uses or makes: favorite foods, money, monuments, heirlooms, games, jewelry, musical instrument, etc.

  • PRACTICES could include the things that you do normally with a group: traditions, celebrations, greetings, rite of passage, habits, manners, how you travel, something that you do every weekend, a mealtime or bedtime routine, etc.
If you (as a parent) are interested in sharing more about a culture, please let us know here:   bit.ly/labtravels . Please feel free to contact any World Languages teacher if you have any questions!

Lunch orders must be placed at least 7 days in advance to allow the caterer enough time to purchase/prepare the appropriate amount of food. If you are purchasing lunch on specific days, you must let the caterer know which days your child intends to eat lunch at least 7 days in advance by emailing or adding a note to your order.

Also, we only have silverware (well, plasticware) available if your child has purchased school lunch. If your child brings his/her lunch, please send all utensils from home.
