NOVEMBER 7, 2016 - IN THIS ISSUE
A BIG, SHORT WEEK
It is a short week, and this enewsletter is proof that things are busy, busy, busy at school. Instead of reading a long message from me today, I encourage you to take a look at all of the events and activities happening at at Lab and commit to participating in something new. Whether it is helping with our Kindergarten Open House, supporting our school at our upcoming dining night out, taking part in one of our parenting seminars, helping with lunch,  attending your child's enrichment showcase, volunteering for the Movie & Holiday Market on Dec 10, or even tutoring or knitting, I hope you will find even more ways to connect with and support your school. We are so grateful for the parents who are active at Lab, and we hope all families will find a way to be part of our community.

Even with everything going on this month, we are already looking ahead to next year. If you have another child in your family that would like to attend Charlotte Lab School, complete the application below.

2017/18 APPLICATION FOR ADMISSIONS PREFERENCE
Please complete ONE application for any SIBLING of a student currently enrolled at Charlotte Lab School, or any child of a current Charlotte Lab School employee or Board member. The State of NC defines SIBLING as children who share at least 1 parent, children whose parents/legal guardians are legally married, or any children who reside in a family foster home.

As stated in our Enrollment & Admissions Policy, Charlotte Lab School desires to create school community where whole families learn together. Siblings of currently enrolled students will receive priority for admission if their applications are received by the designated deadline and CLS has seats available. If the number of siblings exceeds the number of available seats in a grade level, a separate sibling preference lottery will be held to determine which students are admitted.

All Applications must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Wednesday December 21, 2016 to be eligible for the admissions preference.

We also have a KINDERGARTEN OPEN HOUSE for prospective kindergarten parents coming up on Wednesday November 9 from 6:00-8:00 pm .  If you can help welcome prospective families and answer questions about your family's experience at Lab, please sign up here. If you have never helped out at an open house before, don't worry!  We will go over basic talking points together beforehand, it will be a lot of fun.

Thank you for being part of our community.

Sincerely,

Mary Moss Brown
Head of School

DEC 10 MOVIE AND MARKET
Mark your calendars for our first Annual Charlotte Lab School Movie and Holiday Market. The event will take place on Saturday, December 10 from 3:00-5:00 pm at UNCC City Center (across the street from the Lab School)

The PTSO will be sponsoring a Movie Drop-off Event for kids beginning at 3:00 pm. And, for a little extra fun, the PTSO will also be setting up a marketplace for Lab families and friends to buy and sell products. Finally, we will wrap up the event with some caroling and hot chocolate.

We need your help to make this event a success. Here's how:
  1. VENDORS: Come and set up a table at our Holiday Market. We ask that all vendors to donate 10-25% of their purchases to the school and provide an item for the Silent Auction or Raffle. Please reserve your table now.
  2. VOLUNTEERS: We need volunteers to help arrange the event, run the event, and watch the children during the movie. If you are can help please let us know. There are plenty of opportunities for busy parents with a limited amount of time.
  3. SILENT AUCTION/RAFFLE ITEM: If you have items or know someone who does, please connect us with vendors who can donate  raffle or silent auction items.
  4. SPONSORS: If you want to sponsor the hot chocolate, candy canes, snacks, or other items we welcome your support. We will recognize all of our sponsors in our enewsletter and onsite signage.
Please email VP of Fundraising Kess Clark if you are able to help with any of the activities above or would like to be involved. More information will follow.
HORNETS TICKETS
This year, tickets for the Hornets game will be held at Will Call under the Family's last name. Please bring an ID with you to claim your tickets. Leslie Mueller will be emailing the parents of the first 45 students that bought tickets with details about the pregame experience they are eligible to attend. Questions? Contact Leslie Mueller at [email protected].
BOX TOPS WINNERS
Congratulations to Mrs. Najensons class! They are the overall winners for collecting the most box tops and rewards. As a result they have a No Uniform Day tomorrow. The grade-level winners are  Kindergarten - Doig, 1st grade - Najenson , 2nd grade - Whitelaw, 3rd grade - Castro, 4th grade - French and 5th grade - Scott. Thank you to students and parents who helped us raise over $400 during this competition. The new competition starts now and will be for Box Tops ONLY this time.  The slate is wiped clean so anyone can win!
CALLING ALL KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS
Your expertise can be put to good use as chilly temperatures arrive in Charlotte and the holidays approach. As part of the upcoming PTSO coat/mitten/hat drive and the silent auction/raffle, we would like to donate hand knit or crocheted hats, scarves, or mittens, and we need your help. If you are interested in helping, please email Art Teacher Lisa Charde and we will find a time to gather. We have some knitting supplies to share so you don't need to buy anything to participate or we you can use your own yarn and needles. All volunteers should have a basic knowledge of knitting/crocheting; this is not a class, rather a coordinated effort to create handmade items from our community.
STUDENT PORTRAITS - RETAKES
By now, we hope you have seen the proofs of your child's school portraits, which were sent to all parents via email last week. If you haven't found the email, please search for [email protected] in your inbox.

We know that not every picture turns out perfectly--even with an amazing photographer like Mandy and adorable children as the subjects. So, Mandy has graciously agreed to offer retakes on Monday, Nov 14 in the morning. Any parent who wishes to have their child's picture retaken must   complete this form Please enter your child's name in the comments field.
