"STEAMY Summer Week"
Tuesday, July 22 - Friday, July 25

Featuring a new STEAM focus each day of the week, join in the STEAMY fun led by high school students from the Charter School of Wilmington's "Science Ambassadors" program. Each day is divided into morning and afternoon sessions, with different activities conducted in each session. Click here to visit our calendar page for a full schedule of activities and times, or check out the sneak preview below!
  • Biology Tuesday: Learn all about genome diversity and the biology of yeast; extract DNA from strawberries; explore tessellations; use geometry to make eschers; create geo flowers; or try your hand at macrame
  • Chemistry Wednesday: Explore chromatography; learn about pH in food and water; use bubble painting to create stationary; make your own ice cream from scratch; and whip up batches of oobleck and glirch
  • Engineering Thursday: Discover electricity and magnetism with a Tesla coil; construct your own K'nex bridge; build a safety seat for an egg drop; set-off bottle rockets; and interact with robots from MOE 365 FIRST Robotics team
  • Physics Friday: Learn about optics and circuits with bulbs; meet Birds of Flight from Animal Behavior and Conservation Connections (ABCC) including different species of owls and hawks; discover sound waves and make instruments with straws; and engineer pan pipes

In addition to students from the Charter School of Wilmington, special guests throughout the week include Cab Calloway students, chemists from Wilmington University, MOE 365 FIRST Robotics Team, and Animal Behavior and Conservation Connections (ABCC).

STEAMY Summer Week activities run 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm on Tuesday through Thursday; and 1pm-2:30pm and 3pm-6:30pm on Friday. Activities in morning and afternoon sessions vary. Please visit the DCM's calendar page for more details.

TEACH FLEET is setting sail for the DCM! You won't want to miss this display of expertly crafted model ships constructed entirely from LEGO bricks! Commodore Wilbert McKinley's TEACH FLEET program uses hand-built LEGO naval ship models - up to six feet long! - to teach kids about architecture, technology, engineering, and more.

McKinley, a former ship designer for shipyards and naval architecture firms, now has over 150 ship models in his TEACH FLEET program and currently has the largest LEGO ship fleet in the world. Come check out his fleet of ships constructed entirely from LEGO bricks, and learn all about careers in STEM!
