This Week at Grace

A Final Word
Dear Grace,

During these weeks that I have served you as interim pastor, we have celebrated the birth of Kate and Kyle's second child, Samuel; we have baptized him into the church universal and said, "Goodbye and Godspeed," to their family as they prepare to travel north to find a new home and new faith community. We have watched as Kate, then Calissa  (and now welcoming Calissa and Michael's daughter, Nora, into the world) , grew large with child while daily steering this ship call Grace on Ponce through the channel. What a vivid reminder of Mary and what she must have been thinking about the child in her womb!

We have listened to a wide variety of excellent preachers and weekly have come to the table of Christ for strength and renewal. We have continued to partner in ministry and mission projects with GBGM and other groups. We have seen the number of requests increase for financial help from folks in need with the coming of cold weather. And we have participated in one of the wackiest elections in the country's history. While all that was going on, Bishop Sue and the cabinet were prayerfully considering whom she would appoint January 1st as Grace's new pastor-in-charge. The Reverend Stacey Rushing will preside at the table when we celebrate the Covenant Renewal Service the first Sunday of the year. Stacey is an energetic, creative and bold pastoral leader who will build on the work Kate has accomplished.

The season of Advent is all about watching, waiting, staying awake, repenting and making room so that we can accommodate the breaking in of God's kingdom in our lives. A preacher-friend of mine calls this interim time that I am serving with you, a "fallow time," but I disagree. While the culture has competed for our time, energy, and money, we Grace church people have continued to work all the harder, pray without ceasing, give generously, and look to the future with anticipation and hope. It seems to me that that is what the celebration of the birth of Christ is all about!

Waiting and with gratitude,

Lee
