THE WEEK IN REFLECTION:
Lincoln Middle School Program

This week we held our annual Holocaust education program with Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica. On Monday, LAMOTH staff and Survivor Speakers traveled to the school to introduce the project, with Survivors speaking to students about their personal experiences and answering students' questions. Later in the week, the students visited the Museum for tours and reflection sessions that gave students the opportunity to discuss what they learned and to write notes to the Survivors they met.

THE WEEK IN REFLECTION:
Marie Kaufman Visits Shalhevet High School

LAMOTH Survivor Advisory Board member Marie Kaufman traveled to Shalhevet High School this week to speak with its 12th grade class. The graduating class will be visiting LAMOTH and learning about the Holocaust in their classrooms in preparation for their trip to Poland and Israel at the end of the year. After Marie shared her story of survival, one student pointed out that she counted fourteen people who helped rescue Marie.
THE WEEK IN REFLECTION:
Idele Stapholtz Visits Brawerman Elementary School

Survivor Speaker Idele Stapholtz visited Brawerman Elementary School's 6th grade classes this week to speak with students about her experiences during the war and explore the personal narratives of the students, each of whom brought an artifact of significance to their families. This is the fourth year of LAMOTH's Speaker Series at Brawerman. The current Brawerman 6th grade class visited the Museum this past fall.
THE WEEK IN REFLECTION:

SPOTLIGHT:
Portraits in Black & White: Survivors and What They Carry

If you haven't yet seen  Portraits in Black and White: Survivors and What They Carry at LAMOTH, you have until the end of February to experience this powerful exhibit. Photographer Barbara Mack's portraits of Holocaust Survivors capture the essence of these remarkable people, many of whom pose with an object from their past. Cherished objects and family heirlooms -- a faded photo, a kiddush cup, a violin -- add powerful and evocative layers to these stunning images. The black and white portraits are accompanied by fascinating life stories. Read more about the exhibit and the project behind it in this Jewish Journal story.

SURVIVOR SPEAKER SERIES:
David Lenga
Sunday, February 7, at 2:00 pm

Please join us on Sunday for a talk by David Lenga, who was born in 1927 in Lodz, Poland. Shortly after Germany invaded Poland, David's family was forced to move into the Lodz Ghetto. He eventually was separated from his parents and younger brother, and he remained in the Lodz Ghetto until it was liquidated in 1944. David was sent to Auschwitz, and then to a labor camp in Bavaria. He and a few other prisoners escaped and hid throughout Southern Germany until they were liberated by American troops in May 1945.

You can see artifacts reflecting David's experiences during the Holocaust in our weekly Survivor Speaker micro-exhibit, located near the front desk.
