Online Exhibit:
An Old Sea Dog Takes to the Air

It was unlikely that Harry Lyon Jr. (1885-1963) would play an essential role on the first trans-Pacific airplane flight. As a student he had been known more for misdeeds than accomplishments. He had a successful career as a merchant mariner. In the winter of 1928, Harry was in California as a witness in a rum running case when his friend, Captain J.C. James Phinney Baxter's 180th Birthday Party

Join us to celebrate one of Portland's most important civic fathers. A businessman, historian, and philanthropist, James Phinney Baxter (1831-1921) served as mayor of Portland for six years. Among many accomplishments, Baxter led efforts to create what is now Baxter Boulevard, to secure the land between the Eastern Promenade and harbor as public space, and to build the original Baxter Library. Baxter was also the president of MHS during a period of tremendous growth (1889-1921) that included MHS's move to Portland, the Longfellow family's gift of the Longfellow House, and the planning and construction of the MHS library.

This event will include a reception, birthday cake, and a brief illustrated overview of Baxter's life, career, and contributions to Maine presented by State Historian Earle Shettleworth, Jr. This event is free and open to the public.
