Historical Item: Post-Mortem Portrait

post mortem

Post-mortem photography emerged soon after the invention of the daguerreotype in 1839 and evolved over the course of the 19th century. Photography, more affordable than commissioning a painted portrait, enabled families to memorialize loved ones and became commonplace. The subject of this ca. 1843 portrait is Mrs. William H. Herbert, daughter of George Barker, a ship captain in Bangor. See the item and record on Maine Memory.

For the Person Who Has Everything

Gifts given to celebrate milestones in someone's life--a birthday, anniversary, retirement, special accomplishment--not only honor the individual, but also provide larger benefits that live on. Consider giving a tribute gift which can help provide a unique museum education experience for underserved children, underwrite critical maintenance of the Longfellow House, or support many other activities at MHS.

 Tribute Gifts

Maine Historical Society is happy to create special certificates that can be given to those who are honored with a tribute gift. For more information about making a memorial or tribute gift, contact Deborah Stone, Director of Development at dstone@mainehistory.org or by phone at 774-1822 ext. 231.
