NEW This Week
“Can you tell us about a time when, despite being a messy/broken sinner, someone showed that they fully loved you?”

After I graduated college, I joined staff with Campus Crusade for Christ and was assigned to the University of Alabama where I did ministry for five years. I was young, insecure, and fairly overwhelmed by the culture as well as the scope of my job. I joined two married couples who had been on staff for years. Steve (my director) and Heather Johnson had four small children at the time, and though they had very busy lives they welcomed me into their staff team and their family with open arms. I remember the first time I met Steve. All the students involved in the ministry were gathering at their house for a time of prayer before the new school year began. I was so nervous to meet all of them. Would they like me? Would I be able to fit in? In my nervousness I told Steve that I didn’t love meeting new people and that large groups overwhelmed me. Years later he told me that in that moment, he didn’t think that I would last on campus more than six months. What amazes me is that he never treated me that way. He always spoke belief into me. He would encourage me and cheer me on. Steve would ask me about my ministry, but what he most cared about was how I was growing in my walk with the Lord. He was not unaware of my immaturity or my lack of faith, and I don’t even think that my sin annoyed him- he just loved me through it! I am so thankful that God placed me with people who just loved me when I most struggled to believe that God could truly love me. He used their love to heal wounds, to give me confidence, and ultimately help me accept His flawless love.
