By following Jesus and reaching out to others, we seek God's transformation of ourselves and our world.
Greetings!
Our integrity is put to the test every day, in virtually every situation. We are being watched closely to see how we will respond. The choice of our walk matching our talk, our behavior matching our beliefs, our character matching our confession is left to us. What will we do? We begin to wrap up this part of our series, Follow The Leader, as we look at Jesus’ teaching from Matthew 7:15-23.

Food for Fifty
Every other Sunday at 1:30pm, our L.O.S.T. (Local Outreach Support Team) will be inviting 50 families into our church. During their time here, Liliana Rivera will translate that day’s sermon into Spanish and hand out some basic food needs (eggs, rice, beans and milk) and clothing donations.

Please click on the link below to sign up to provide food items and clothing. The clothing does not need to be new, but clean and in good condition. Donations of clothing (both children and adult) will continually be accepted; and jackets and blankets are needed too!

Our next Food for Fifty will be held on Sunday, February 11th, and will then start up again after Hypothermia week.

The Lenten Season Begins
So what does "Shrove" mean? And why are some Christians eating pancakes?
Pancakes were traditionally eaten on the day before Ash Wednesday because they were a way to use up eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. Liturgical fasting during Lent emphasizes eating plainer food and refraining from "pleasurable" foods such as meat, dairy and eggs. Many people "give something up" during Lent as a way to prepare for Easter.

Ash Wednesday Service
February 14th at 5:30 am & 7:30 pm
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline.

Ash Wednesday emphasizes two themes: our sinfulness before God and our human mortality. The service focuses on both themes, helping us to realize that both have been triumphed through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

During the Ash Wednesday service, the pastor will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship. Historically, ashes signified purification and sorrow for sins.

Please join us for a meaningful start to the season of Lent.

We need your support! Pender hypothermia working with Fairfax FACETS is a life-saving effort by local faith-based communities to serve those experiencing homelessness in Fairfax County and encourages guests to take steps towards self-sufficiency and stability as much as possible.

Thank you!
From Debbie McKamey
I’d like to thank my wonderful Pender church family for all the support you have shown me upon my retirement. Thank you for all the good wishes, cards, gifts and especially the hugs you have showered on me during the transition. I loved being your Church Administrator for the past 11 years! This position was a calling from God and I was abundantly blessed by Him and by you as I served in this role.  I have many, many happy memories of my time in the position. Pender is a wonderful church and it is blessed by wonderful pastors and staff. Serving with them has been a pleasure and I will miss being with them on a daily basis more than I can say.
Verne and I aren’t going anywhere. We’re still members and we look forward to continuing our service here, with all of you, at Pender.

Much Love, Debbie
