Friends -

What a joy it was to be back at "full strength" on Sunday.  Mother Mary and I were careful to schedule our vacations back to back so that one of us would be here all summer.  Now that summer is coming to an end, it was really great to be back at the altar together!  She blessed us with a wonderful sermon on wisdom and finding balance in life.  You can listen to this sermon by clicking here.

We have a big day coming up on Sunday - with our Ministry Fair and "Blessing of the Backpacks" Sunday.  Come early and stay late to church to tour the different tables where you can sign up to participate in the different ministries of our church.  Get involved!  We need you now more than ever at St. Andrew's.

Also, don't forget to have your school aged children to bring a backpack with them to the blessed.  We will pray over these backpacks and for each student returning to school.  We will also pray for the teachers and school staff as well.  (If that is you, wear your school's shirt!)  This is a wonderful invitational Sunday.  Be on the lookout for a special e-mail designed to forward to your friends or share on Facebook.

Also, please be in prayer as our Vestry is on its annual retreat this weekend.  Wonderful things are happening at St. Andrew's, and I'm glad that God has sent us you to be a part of it!

Blessings - Mike+

August 21, 2012 - Ministry Fair & Blessing of the Backpacks

  Backpack Blessing

                           Ministry Fair
St. Andrew's will hold its annual Ministry Fair on Sunday, August 26.  Beginning at 8:30am you can peruse tables with information and sign-up lists for all the ministries here at St. Andrew's.  Tables will also be open between the two services and after the late service.  Come enjoy Pigs-in-a-Blanket and other breakfast items, visit with fellow members, and see which ministries are calling your name.  We'll also have information about our Christian Formation offerings for this year.  Make plans to join us!

                 Back-to-School Sunday
Join us on Sunday, August 26th for Back-to-School Sunday.  Students are encouraged to bring their backpacks to be blessed.  At both services we will pray over our kids as they begin their new school year, as well as for the teachers and administrators in our congregation.  This is a great way to kick off our program year and a great Sunday to invite your friends and neighbors!

SAY Update

Today, Aug 26, the St. Andrew's Youth will meet to attend the Jason Castro Concert at Cottonwood Baptist Church. All youth and families are invited!  We will meet at Cottonwood (1015 Hwy 121, between Stacy & Lake Forrest/Watters) at 5:15 at the door.  The concert begins at 6pm.  Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door.  Let us know on the FaceBook page if you're coming and we'll try to save seats.

Wednesday Dinner & Discipleship Resumes!
On Wed, Sep 12 we will resume our weekly Dinner & Discipleship.  "Come when you can" dinner begins at 6:15 with classes meeting at 7pm.  Come for all or part of the evening.  Classes offered are:
The Parenting Course - This is a five week DVD class that addresses common challenges in parenting children up to 10 years of age.  We'll discuss building strong foundations, setting boundaries, and teaching healthy relationships. We'll use a course workbook and break into groups to share and learn with those who have children of similar age.  Fr. Mike will lead this class is Room 101.
The Two Halves of Life - We spend the first half of life building our identities - climbing, achieving, and performing.  In our second half of life we embark on a new journey that takes us inward, toward the spiritual joy and peace that life has in store for us.  We'll use Richard Rohr's Falling Upward: Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life to discuss how we live these two halves of life and gather some tips and wisdom for the journey.  Mtr. Mary will lead this class in Room 102.
Bring the Family!  Childcare is provided.
McKinney Food Pantry Collection
During the month of August St. Andrew's will be collecting canned tomatoes (stewed, diced, sauce, etc.) to help stock the Community Food Pantry of McKinney.  You may place your donations in the bins in the Hospitality Hallway.  Please limit your donation to 15oz cans as larger cans are difficult for the pantry to stock and utilize.  Thank you for your generosity!

   Worship Ministry Training/Meeting
On Saturday, Sep 15th at 9:30 am we will hold a Worship Ministry training/meeting.  If you participate as a Lay Reader, Chalice Bearer, Usher or Master of Ceremonies (MC), or would like to participate in these ministries, please make plans to attend.  We will also be discussing the Bishop's visit for Confirmations on Sunday, September 23.
            Bishop's Visit & Confirmations
On Sunday, Sep 23 - Bishop Stanton will be visiting St. Andrew's and offering the Sacrament of Confirmation.  If you have taken a Confirmation Preparation and would like to be Confirmed, please notify the office.  If you have any questions about Confirmation contact Fr. Mike or Mtr. Mary.

Mentors for Burks

One of the most important ways that we partner with our Adopt-a-School, Burks Elementary, is by providing Mentors for their students.  Mentors are SO important in the life of an at-risk child.  Currently there are many more children who need Mentors than adults serving in this ministry.  Mentoring requires only one hour a week during the school year and no planning is needed.  If you are interested in becoming a Mentor or would like more information, please contact Mtr. Mary.

                        KISS Groups
It is time for a new KISS rotation!  KISS groups are groups of 8 to 10 adults who meet for dinner once monthly in one another's homes over several months.  After about 4 months, the groups are shuffled and a new rotation begins.  KISS groups are a GREAT way for our newer members to get to know more folks.  Sign-up sheets for the new KISS rotation will be on the Fellowship Table at the Ministry Fair on Sunday, August 26.  If you have questions contact Russ Lessmann at rlessmann@tx.rr.com.
