From the Rector
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

The Shakers, the Quakers, the candlestick makers... Have you ever thought about the meaning of our name, The Episcopal Church? The term "episcopal" comes from the Greek for "overseer" and is the earliest moniker for bishops in the Christian Church. Our use of the term self-consciously frames our identity in reference to our history. We are catholic, yet protestant; orthodox, yet reform. It is, of course, also a nod of gratitude to the bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church, who gave us our first bishops after the revolution--something the Church of England steadfastly refused to do.

Our bishops are symbols of the unity of the Church, and in ancient tradition, they make their way throughout their dioceses to visit each of the churches. In this way, the local parish is reminded of its place in the greater body of the faithful both in our diocese and in the world.

I am very pleased to announce that Bishop Mary Glasspool will officially visit St. Mary's on Sunday, October 14. On that day, she will preach and celebrate the Holy Eucharist, as well as perform a baptism. In her role as an overseer of the Church, she will meet with me as one of her priests and with the vestry as a whole. A bishop's visit is also an occasion for other rites of initiation into the Church.

Are you an Episcopalian? If you're not, and are interested in exploring baptism, confirmation, or reception in this Church during Bishop Glasspool's visit, please let me know . Baptism is full initiation into the Church; confirmation is an adult (or youth 13+) profession of faith; reception is reserved for those already baptized in other communions, and is an official welcome. You can read through these liturgies in the Book of Common Prayer beginning on page 299. I hope you are looking forward to this joyous day as much as I am.

Blessings,
Father Rick
Fall Outreach Update
When you are cleaning out your closets and preparing for the new school year, please donate your unwanted/outgrown clothing and shoes to St Mary's.

These will be gratefully received and will be reused in several ways:
  1. To sell at our next Yard Sale which is scheduled for Saturday October 27th.
  2. To be donated to local children at the request from teachers who identify individual children whose family budget is stretched too far.
  3. To be donated to Helping Hands of Rockland County for their free thrift shop serving the homeless.
  4. To be carried by me to South Africa at the beginning of October when i visit our sponsored orphans and destitute families being supported by Carryou. South Africa is going into Spring at the moment so Summer clothes are particularly needed.

Your donations can be brought to St Mary's any weekday between 9 am and 1 pm or at other times by arrangement. Please, everything must be clean and in good repair!
