From the Rector

Dear St. Patrick's,

Grace and peace. We are in the midst of the heat and humidity of August. I hope that you are finding relief. One such source of relief is the newly redesigned St. Patrick's website (www.stpatrickschurchdc.org). If you were to miss church (I'm speaking to those who would), the weekly sermon is posted. You can always read it and sometimes you can listen to the audio file. This is a wonderful way to continue reflecting on God's call in your life. If you were to misplace the Wednesday email (again, I'm writing to those who would), an archive of Wednesday emails (titled, "This Week at St. Patrick's") are also available. On the St. Patrick's homepage, the four most recent postings are listed in the right column.

In the next Limerick, we will share some of the new features on the website that help to keep us connected and invite church seekers to join us. If you think of something else that would make our website better, please let me know (realizing that my expertise in web development is limited).

I call your attention to Andrea's announcement, below, for the new Sunday School curriculum that will begin in September. The curriculum is a change in direction. Instead of weekly, stand alone lessons, children will be immersed in a theme for 3-4 weeks. The first theme is the "12 Who Changed the World." Please register your children for Sunday School, today.

TRY ST. PATRICK'S AGAIN, FOR THE FIRST TIME! (from August 4 Wed. Email)

Faithfully,

Music
Ave MariaAugust 15 is the Feast Day of St. Mary. Though it is officially "transferred" to the following Monday since it falls on a Sunday this year, we are still taking the opportunity this week to sing a few "Mary songs." And of course, a collection of songs about the Virgin Mother would not be complete without an "Ave Maria." Lesley Riddle, our Mezzo-Soprano soloist, will sing perhaps the lesser known setting of the Hail Mary; that of Charles Gounod, who set this most sacred text to the beautifulFeast Day of St. Mary accompaniment of Bach's Prelude in C Major. It is one of the most inspired pairings in musical literature -- so much so that it has been sung at countless wedding ceremonies.
You will also get your chance to sing about Mary as we use a contemporary setting of the Magnificat or "Song of Mary" for our Processional, and beautiful Chvez-Melo "Sing of Mary, pure and lowly" during Communion.

Welcome GWU Students!

The Whole Month of August, Bring Items for Student Care Packages

Did you know that during the 2009-2010 school year, 4 GW students worshiped with us regularly?
In just a few weeks, these 4 will return, along with 500 of their classmates. The Mount Vernon Campus (or "The Vern" as students call it) is a satellite campus to the main Foggy Bottom location.
In anticipation of students joining us this fall, please bring items that we can tuck into gift bags which we will give them when they visit:
Rolls of quarters for coin-op laundry
Study snacks: peanut butter crackers, popcorn, candy, etc.
Metro Smart Cards
Safeway cards
New pens / pencils
D.C. postcards and stamps
Look for the collection bins outside the Nave.
Haiti Outreach: School Supplies
Marcy Ference, the Haiti Coordinator for St. Patrick's Day School, asks that as you shop for school supplies this August to remember that every year we send pencils, pens, crayons, spiral notebooks, notebook paper, composition books, erasers, scissors, colored paper, and white blackboard chalk to our friends at St. Etienne's and Christ Redempteur schools.
The need is great every year, but even more so now in the months after the earthquake. Please bring these (new only) items-there will be a bin at the stained glass windows on Sundays or in the Development Office during the week.
