From the Rector
Dear St. Patrick's,
Grace and peace. We are quickly approaching the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. This year, the anniversary falls on a Sunday. At our services on that day, we will say special prayers honoring those who lost their lives, and the Holy Eucharist will be said in commemoration of that most hallowed day. At 8:30am, we will toll the bell (in the bell tower) along with other churches across the country. There are also events at our Cathedral on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (September 9-11, 2011) (more information about Cathedral offerings).
Not only is September 11th a special day of remembrance, it is also the beginning of a new program year at St. Patrick's. During the service, we will bless backpacks of those returning to school (teachers and students, and briefcases for those who have other vocations), and fellowship time will include a picnic lunch, a moonbounce, and a live sheep. Yes, I said sheep (the first unit for Sunday School is "Jesus the Good Shepherd"). Please mark September 11th on your calendar (see below for more information).
The people and the buildings of St. Patrick's survived yesterday's earthquake. I pray that you are safe. Remember that the Rev. Dr. Janet Zimmerman, our new Associate Rector and Day School Chaplain, will preach this Sunday. Not that you needed another reason to attend church, but there it is. Faithfully,

Prayer List
We pray for Stephen Brown who died earlier this month, and for his family and friends who gathered at a memorial service at St. Patrick's earlier today. Mr. Brown was a close friend of the Rev. Don Bitsberger.
We pray for Mary Graham who died earlier this month, and for her family, especially her son Dan Graham, daughter-in-law Amy Graham and grandsons Will and Connor. A service to celebrate her life will be held this Sunday afternoon at St. Patrick's.

Help Make Sunday School at St. Patrick's Happen
Needed for September: *2-3 Shepherds for our 1st-2nd Grade class *1-2 Shepherds for our 5th-6th Grade class *Workshop leaders for all workshops, including 2 more for our "Good Shepherd" unit that starts September 18. "Shepherds" are classroom hosts who are there every week but who never prepare a lesson. This is a job that can be shared with a 2nd adult, so that shepherds may rotate every other week. Workshop leaders teach one lesson for 3 or 4 weeks. Learn more about each of these roles, register your children and sign up to teach by clicking here.

Music Update
Thank you to Claire Keller for starting off our summer Youth Music Series! She played a lovely Celtic tune for the Offertory last Sunday. Bravo! This week we have Keaton and Katie Lee offering some terrific piano music for our service and over Labor Day weekend, the strings are coming! Our young people add a lot to our music here at St. Patrick's throughout the year and it's so great to see them offer their talents to the community. A big thank you to all our young musicians! ~Adele Lynch, Director of Music |
While You're Shopping for Back to School Items . . .
Please buy any extra pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, erasers, and colored pencils to contribute to our next shipment to Haiti. This is a tremendous help to St. Etienne's and Christ Redempteur School. Items can be dropped off at the Church Office. |
Kick Off Sunday & Blessing of the Backpacks on September 11 Mark your calendars now to join us for the 10am service on Sunday, September 11 for Kick Off Sunday, and the Blessing of the Backpacks! We will have our traditional cook-out with potluck salads and desserts, and of course, the moonbounce! Last year it rained, and we had the moonbounce in the Great Hall! We're due for some good weather this year, so come rain or shine, bring your backpack (or your brief case). Last Names: A-K please bring desserts L-Z please bring side dish/salads We're looking for volunteers for the Costco shopping beforehand, and the clean-up crew, so contact Karen Melchar if you can help! This is a great event to bring neighbors and friends for a friendly and fun introduction to St. Patrick's. Dress casually and plan to stay for food, fun and fellowship with your St. Patrick's family.
