From the Rector
Dear St. Patrick's, Grace and peace. I spent last week on a short vacation to Bethesda for the US Open Golf Tournament. It may not have been far, but it was so much fun. My pedometer recorded over 115,000 steps in seven days. Beginning Saturday, I will be with eight St. Patrick's kids at Camp Wright an Episcopal camp in our neighboring Diocese. The 81-year-old camp is situated on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay on Kent Island near the eastern terminus of the Bay Bridge. I will be teaching religious education during the week to the 155 residential campers from Grade 2 through Grade 8. I will return on July 1 just in time for the July 4th weekend. Remember that we will be parading through the Palisades gathering at St. Patrick's at 10:15am on Monday, July 4th. This is a great way to celebrate Independence Day, support St. Patrick's, and experience Americana. As always, we will worship on Sunday, July 3rd at 8am and 10am. I wrote you a short note last Saturday announcing the election of the Rev. Dr. Mariann Budde as the IX Bishop of Washington. I do believe that this is a wonderful call of an excellent servant to be the pastor of this Diocese. In order to be elected, a candidate must receive a majority in the two houses (clergy and lay) of the Diocesan Convention. In a field of five excellent nominees, Budde received a clear majority from the clergy in the first ballot and was only six votes short in the lay house. She was resoundingly elected in the second ballot receiving 239 of the 338 votes cast. Please read more about our next bishop (more information) and keep her in your prayers as she and Diocese prepare for her ordination and consecration on November 12, 2011. Faithfully,
P.S. Our Summer Sanctuary Chair Order will be official tomorrow. As of right now, we have 56 chairs dedicated. Send Karen an email if you want to join that list or follow this link to the online form. |

Music Update
Thank you to Lesley Riddle for starting off our "summer solo season" last Sunday with a terrific gospel song, "Here's One." Suzanne Carter and Jean-Luc Princivil are up this week with a Bach Aria for Soprano and Violin. We also look forward to having Amanda Brown back with us this summer. We were fortunate to have her with us in Cantoris Choir for the last part of our choir season this year, too. Thanks for joining us, Amanda!

Countdown to Horizons Summer
St. Patrick's will welcome 45 Horizons students this summer! Horizons is looking for volunteers to help with summer lunch, which gives teachers a little break during the day! Volunteers need to be 16 years old or older to volunteer on their own. We would love if volunteers can commit to one day a week (let us know what days work best for you) or just one or two days during the summer. Whatever works best for you, works for us! The program runs from Monday, June 27th to Friday, August 5th. We will be closed on Monday, July 4th for the holiday. Please sign-up with Elizabeth Johnson at ejohnson@horizonsgreaterwashington.org or call 202-939-8885 if you are interested in volunteering. Horizons is a summer-based intervention that helps low-income students continue learning at a time when they might otherwise experience a decline in their academic development. St. Patrick's is excited to continue its partnership with Bancroft Elementary School in Mount Pleasant. |
Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington to Celebrate 25 Years this September!
David Downes, the Director of Samaritan Ministry Greater Washington, shares the following testimonial about how another Partner Parish celebrated Samaritan Ministry's 25th anniversary. How will St. Patrick's celebrate? Dear Samaritan Ministry Friends: I am back from our ( very long and festive) Pentecostal Service and would like to thank you so much for connecting us with Scott. He did such an excellent job speaking during the sermon to the church full of people. Father Robert Harvey started the sermon with a short overview of the Samaritan Ministry, and mentioned that the Church of Our Saviour is one of the 40+ churches supporting this organization. Next Fr. Robert introduced Scott and talked briefly about the next step program and the spiritual retreats. Following Fr. Robert's introduction Scott spoke about his struggles, and how we was able to turn his life around, as well as how he benefited from participation in the Samaritan Ministry program. Scott was very professional, spoke with a great dignity and he was very sincere and true. When he finished, Father Robert continued his sermon referring to the Spirit that transformed Scott's life. It was a very powerful combination, and it was very obvious that the sermon moved people as so many of them walked up with the special offering for Samaritan Ministry. This offering was then blessed and we all prayed for Scott and the Samaritan Ministry. I would like to ask that you reach out to Scott and acknowledge his absolutely wonderful testimony. He told me he had not slept very well being very nervous about this talk. The church was full of people, and we are very diverse congregation which may be intimidating. It was a lot to ask for and Scott gave a lot. Scott was such an inspiration to me personally, and to many people in our Church and we are thanking Scott from the bottom of our hearts. I will personally keep him in my prayers and I promised to give him a quick call to let him know how much money he helped us to raise. I had a feeling that he was a bit surprised seeing so many people walking with offerings, and I emphasized that it was the Spirit working through HIM. Please make sure to acknowledge all his efforts. Thank you Samaritan Ministry Friends, and let's the Spirit of love and compassion work among us! Marta Partner Parish Rep Our Saviour Episcopal Church Silver Spring, Maryland If you have ideas how St. Patrick's can celebrate Samaritan Ministry's anniversary, please share with your clergy, wardens, or your Parish Rep. Peggy Beers.
