From the Rector
Dear St. Patrick's,
Grace and peace. The end of the May and the beginning of June are busy times at St. Patrick's. This is, no doubt, due to tying up loose ends before summer. One group that you may not be aware of is the 7th and 8th Grade Classy. Several people have attempted to correct my spelling of their name throughout the year. I actually spelled it correctly. The 7th and 8th graders chose this name at the beginning of the year. The group brainstormed many names before settling on the Classy (if I remember almost unanimously). Last Sunday, the Classy performed on the bells, their last event of the year. In addition to music practice, the Classy has been discussing the nagging questions about faith. The discussions have been lively and thought provoking. The group really came together (average attendance at the end of the year was about 10 kids).
I think there are two reasons for this enthusiasm. One is the curriculum we adopted this past September. It is a short animated video that answers questions that discerning people ask like "Is the Bible true?" "Can I be a Christian without going to church?" and "If Jesus was God, why did he have to die?" The other reason is that George Washington student and parishioner Justin Lingenfelter helped facilitate the group. In addition to his ability to elicit discussion, let's just say that Justin is much more hip than me and even slightly hipper than Andrea. As the Classy closes down for 2011-12, I have great hopes that it will continue to grow in 2012-13. If your children are entering the range of grade 7 or 8, please know that this is a great opportunity to build community at St. Patrick's. We begin again this coming September. Will the name change? I don't know, but I do know that we will be maturing in our faith together. The current 8th graders (as 9th graders) will have the opportunity to continue the discussions as they prepare for Confirmation (another great program opportunity).
Please note the picture to your right. It is not of the Classy but of some classy parishioners honored yesterday at the Washington National Cathedral for their years of ministry on behalf of St. Patrick's. They are, of course, Charlie and Martha Johnson. Congratulate them when next you see them.
The other picture is one I took at this morning's Samaritan Ministry Next Step Breakfast at the National Press Club. St. Patrick's was well represented in this important ministry to those who have been left on the side of road. Thanks to our table captains for beating the bushes and bringing together so
many for this wonderful event.I have one extra ticket to tomorrow's (May 17) graduation ceremony at VTS (Henry McQueen's graduation. It begins at 10am at the Episcopal High School Chapel in Alexandria. If you are interested, please call (703-522-2726) or email me ( kurt@stpatrickschurchdc.org).
Faithfully,
Kurt

Encountering God through Dreams
The Bible is filled with people who dream: Jacob, Joseph, The Magi, and Pilate's wife, just to name a few. During the month of May, the Women's Bible Study will read a book about dreams and how reflecting on them can be a potential source of healing and a starting point for prayer. All women of St. Patrick's are invited: Wednesdays in May: 23 & 30, 9:30-11 am in the Church Library.

Music at St. Patrick's
This Sunday it's Family Choir!
You all sounded great singing with us at the Mother's Day Concert, now sing with us again in Family Choir! Bring your whole crew around 9:15 for donuts, juice and coffee as we learn a simple anthem to share in church. It's fun, it's easy and WE NEED YOU!
Thank you, one and all! Our Mother's Day GALA "Community Sing" brought together singers across the age brackets, as we let our voices ring to kid songs, folk songs Broadway, pop classics and more. All with great accompaniment by Scott Tiemann on Drums and Percussion (complete with train sounds and special effects) and Vince McCool on Trumpet (with that soulful jazz improvisation). Many thanks to all who helped and all who came and sang! Got any pictures from the event? Please send us a copy!
We also give a special thank you to our many music donors whose generous support make all the special music events here at St. Patrick's possible. Look for an updated list in Sunday's bulletin!
