Collect for Proper 4
O God, your never-failing providence sets in order all things both in heaven and earth: Put away from us, we entreat you, all hurtful things, and give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Amen.

Collect for the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Father in heaven, by whose grace the virgin mother of thy incarnate Son was blessed in bearing him, but still more blessed in keeping thy word: Grant us who honor the exaltation of her lowliness to follow her example of her devotion to thy will; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Deep Seeing the Visitation
Canon Jeremy Haselock, Honorary Priest Associate

Canon Jeremy Haselock, Honorary Priest Associate, has written for us a meditation on Jacque Daret's painting of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is today's feast. I've asked Canon Haselock to write for us from time to time and we happy to receive his first installment. Care and Feeding of Congregation will continue next week. - Fr Steve

This lovely image of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth was painted sometime around 1434 by the Flemish artist Jacques Daret (1404-1470) for his friend and patron Jean de Clercq, abbot of the great abbey of St Vaast in the French city of Arras.  The painting is one of only four surviving panels from a great altarpiece of the life of the Blessed Virgin originally in the abbey church.  Abbot de Clercq is shown in the painting tonsured and clad in his simple Benedictine habit but with his abbatial dignity indicated by the fine crozier he holds and the jewelled mitre on the ground beside him.

With quiet but intense devotion the abbot gazes upon the scene which unfolds before him.  The story comes from St Luke's Gospel (Luke 1:39-45): And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;  and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, "Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord."

At first sight, Daret's painting is a rather beautiful but very straightforward representation of the meeting between Mary and Elizabeth. It fits neatly within the stream of traditional visual conventions used by medieval artists to make the scene instantly recognisable to the illiterate. But, conventional or not, it is worth a second and more lingering glance for there are treasures hidden within.

Here is an encounter filled with tenderness.  The artist wants us to call to mind the verse from the Psalms used in the liturgy on the Feast of the Visitation: Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kissed each other. (Psalm 85:10).  Elizabeth, her head covered as befits an elderly matron, places her hand gently on Mary's swelling womb. She feels not only her own babe leaping for joy within her but also Mary's unborn child moving and kicking in recognition.  Mary, her long, beautiful hair uncovered to show she is a virgin, places her right hand tenderly on her cousin's womb where John the Baptist leaps and dances just as King David leapt and danced before the Ark of the Covenant as it was borne into Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 15:28-29). Thus we are led to recall that one of Mary's many devotional titles is Ark of the Covenant for she bore within her for nine months the very Word of God.  As we look deeper into the painting, we see that this is indeed its real theme.

Elizabeth's rich, red robe is trimmed with gold embroidery and so is Mary's but in her case her beautiful, blue cloak is edged with the written word - part of the text of one of the Office Hymns composed for this feast. Mary wears the word to show she carries the Word. Though the surrounding fields are barren, the ground on which the women stand is burgeoning with spring flowers, the earth made fruitful by God's Word.  In the top left-hand corner of the picture we see a late-medieval representation of the city of Jerusalem and, at its heart, the Temple depicted as a Gothic Cathedral.  Here, within the empty Holy of Holies, is where once the Ark of the Covenant had rested. The Ark, fashioned by Moses after the pattern dictated by God, was long gone by New Testament times but this painting shows us who have eyes to see that Mary is the new Ark. The God-man child she holds safe within her womb will be the Great High Priest who, taking us with him will enter definitively and once and for all into the Holy of Holies. As the author of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us: Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith . (Hebrews 10:19-22).

Mom's Small Group Summer Schedule
Shannon Hurley

Being a mom is challenging, no matter the age or stage. Take time this summer to refresh with other moms as we consider how God is at work in our mothering. We will use the book " Beautiful Mess: Motherhood for Every Moment" by Surratt & Eyster as our study guide. Each lesson is distinct, so you can come for meetings when you are able, as well as use it at home.

Gatherings will include moms/kids mornings, moms-only evenings, and a play date at Hanging Rock State Park Lake. Please join us for the first gathering on June 22 at 6:30 p.m. at Zoe's Kitchen (205 S. Stratford Rd.). We will work through Week 1 "Am I Enough" and plan for the rest of the summer. For the first meeting only (to ensure enough seating), please RSVP Shannon at  [email protected] or call/text 336-403-1248.
