In the creation myth of modern American food, Eden is played by pre- and postwar France. It was at its tables that a handful of people well attuned to pleasure had their worlds blasted open. Their ensuing desire to build lives around the joys of food and cooking caused a revolution in the United States - and it isn't over yet.

For a certain food lover,, 1970: M. F. K. Fisher, Julia Child, James Beard, and the Reinvention of American Tastethe unknown delights of, say, a lost recording of the Rolling Stones with the Beatles and Bob Dylan. All of those heavyweights - plus Judith and Evan Jones, Richard Olney and Sybille Bedford - in the same kitchen? Heaven!

Please note: These two activities are combined this month. This movie is also the adaptation of the classic novel by Emile Zola, which was studied at the Club de Lecture earlier in April.

Germinal is a 1993 French epic film. It was directed by Claude Berri, and stars Grard Depardieu, Miou-Miou and Renaud. At the time, it was the most expensive movie ever produced in France. It became the 4th most attended film of the year and won the Csar Award for Best Cinematog-raphy and Best Costume Design (among 12 nominations). The film, set in the nineteenth century, closely follows the plot of the novel, which is a realistic story of a coalminers' strike in northern France in the 1860s
