Urbanophiles of the Midwest, Unite! over new arrivals at the Merc: The remake of Red Dawn, Lions fans, and urban farmers converge in Mark Binelli's Detroit City is the Place to Be. Novelist and historian Thomas Dyja gives us Third Cost, a readable, richly detailed history of the city that brought the world Playboy, Al Capone, Chess Records and "da Bears."
According to the WSJ's Sam Sacks: "stylistic panache, technical daring, moral weight and an uncanny sense of the current moment combine" in the 2013 Pulitzer-Prize-winning The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson, an ingenious tale of North Korean intrigue.
2012 National Book Award finalist The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers, a novel of the Iraq War, is in- a short powerful read. But if you're looking for something less serious, you might try Dave Barry's dark, comic Insane City.
Speaking of Pulitzers, remember Olive Kitteridge? Strout's newest, The Burgess Boys, depicts rocky marriages in the rocky state of Maine, and Susan Burgess bears a not unpassing resemblance to the Olive of yore. Solid, poolside, martini-sipping material.
