Roald Dahl's much -loved story follows the vain attempts of three farmers - Boggis, Bunce and Bean, one fat, one short, one lean - to get rid of the fox who regularly steals food from their farms.  They try to exterminate him by any means possible.  Outwitted at every turn, the farmers' ploys backfire.  Fantastic Mr. Fox devises a plan which will ensure full stomachs for not only his family, but all his friends, who celebrate with a sumptuous feast.

'Of Mice and Men' a powerful opening
for Theatre Centre's new season

BY DEBBIE HALE
CORRESPONDENT - Chattanooga Times Free Press - Friday, October 10, 2014

The Chattanooga Theatre Centre opens its 91st season with John Steinbeck's haunting drama "Of Mice and Men," exposing social issues of 1937, Depression-gripped California that are still prevalent today. With chilling reality, director Scott Dunlap and a cast of 11 examine sexism, racism, homophobia and poor treatment of the mentally ill.
In Steinbeck's masterpiece, the dreams and aspirations of two migrant ranch workers weave and unravel throughout the story. Dunlap has again proven masterful in choosing actors whose distinct capabilities make them perfect in their roles.
Jim Eernisse, a veteran of the CTC stage, portrays George, the uneducated but intelligent leader of this pair of unlikely comrades. He exemplifies total, uninhibited command of the character. His performance is outstanding.
E.J. Laughter, in his CTC debut, portrays George's friend, the physically strong but simple-minded Lennie. He gives an amazing performance in a difficult role, often through his attention to the most minute detail, such as the furrowing of the lines on his brow or the nervous fidgeting of his fingers. His performance is powerful and thought-provoking. It is one of the best performances presented on this stage in recent memory.
The entire cast deserves credit for a job well done with special accolades for LaFrederick Thirkill as Crooks, Greg Rambin Sr. as Candy, and Sugar, a 12-year-old retriever mix, as Candy's dog. Sarah Miecielica's set design is simple but perfect for the emptiness of the time and subject.
Dunlap's sound and costume design provide the perfect embellishments to an evening one will continue to contemplate long after the performance is over.

NorthShore Mural
Friday, November 7 at 4 pm

The NorthShore Merchants Collective is hosting a reception Friday evening November 7 from 4-6 p.m. to celebrate the completion of its first NSMC funded mural.  The reception will start at the mural's site, just across from the Walnut Street Bridge, at Forrest and Frazier, and move down the street to Terra Nostra.

Artist Paul LaJeunesse's painting entitled "Confluence" layers familiar NorthShore landmarks and imagery to create a vibrant and colorful composition celebrating the many ways people live and play on the North Shore. Wishing to emphasize connectivity, LaJeunesse's design depicts human figures entwined with images of some iconic landmarks: the Walnut Street Bridge, the Coolidge Park Fountain and the Carousel.

Paul states that his painting "aims to celebrate the collection of ways people use the NorthShore, giving no precedence to any single place, but to treat the whole community as a collective. The combination of layered imagery allows the viewer to explore the painting, just as they would explore the variety of places on the NorthShore. The color palette is intense and lively, attempting to embody the energy and atmosphere of the community. Underlying all of the imagery is the river, the original lifeline of Chattanooga before the railways. The bridge and the river operate symbolically as connection, trade, travel, ingenuity, but most importantly as a lifeline for a community."

TheatreQuest's THE L PLAY begins this Saturday at 10:30 am.  Lots of fun there and be sure to see Of Mice And Men - it's a masterful, moving production of a great play from one of America's greatest writers.  Next week, we hope you and your friends will come hang out at the Flying Squirrel to raise money for your CTC and come to the Performing Arts League's Sunday Showcase here at the CTC on Sunday October 26.

I'll see you at the Theatre! - GQ
