Doers and Dreamers

 People who make Kingston special

Name:       Evan Jennings

Organization:       Trolley Museum of New York (89 East Strand )

Occupation:     Software Engineer

Age:   51

Where are you from originally?  Duanesburg (rural Schenectady county)

Why are you here?   Hired by IBM in 1983 fresh out of college. Still with IBM 29 years later!

What is your favorite hangout?    Either at the Trolley Museum or at my farm.

Tell us something we never would have guessed about you.       I like vegetable gardening and have a good blueberry patch too. My wife and I freeze enough blueberries every Summer so we can eat them pretty much every day of the year and frequently use them in recipes.

What keeps you here?   IBM, my interest in trolleys, and being close to my farm upstate.

What would you change?   There are still lots of visitors to the Trolley Museum who say "I've lived in/near Kingston xx years and I didn't know this was here until today." How do we change that so Kingston and trolleys are like bread and butter? San Francisco and cable cars? New Orleans and streetcars? One thing that will help is to electrify the trolley line so people can experience our international collection of electric cars. However, that'll take a lot of work to raise the money to make it possible. The more support that the Trolley Museum receives from the people and businesses of Kingston will make it happen that much sooner. Why is this important? The Kingston waterfront has huge potential which is only just beginning to be tapped. As more businesses and attractions take root and people arrive--residents and tourists alike--the Trolley Museum will continue run its trolleys, adding to the appeal and historic character of the waterfront.

Where would we find you on Sunday mornings? Enjoying a hearty breakfast of blueberry pancakes and bacon with my wife.

When you're not in Kingston, what's your idea of a wonderful city to visit, and why?   In the US, San Francisco is a favorite with its famous cable cars. They also have a fleet of trolleys painted in the colors of other cities. You can actually track the historic trolleys in real time on-line: http://www.nextmuni.com/

Abroad, Douglas on the Isle of Man is railfan's paradise: horsecars on the promenade, daily Victorian-era narrow gauge steam trains and 100+ year old trolleys in service. The Snaefell Mountain Railway is spectacular.

My wife and I have also been to Sydney, Australia three times. My #1 recommendation: climb the Sydney Harbor Bridge! The Rocks, Circular Quay and the Opera House are also must-sees. Take a harbor cruise. Check out the Powerhouse Museum too.
