As you know PNEC and PSEC formed PNEC logo
a transition team to begin discussions about how we might work together. A Vision for this work was approved at the April 2017 Annual Meeting. A new team to help us move forward has been formed. It is called the Joint Conference Vision and Development Team. As a part of our work we want to gather information from as many constituencies in the church as possible. Click Here for a survey.  Please copy the survey and distribute it widely to your congregation. It will be helpful to us to have the completed survey forwarded to us by the end of October. We will be happy to report back on our findings after our November 2017 meeting.  We value your input and thank you for taking the time to share your views with us.

Children's Sermon
for  Oct. 22 (based on Mt. 22:15-22)
Items needed:  small American flag; cross on or above altar.   Ask a child to hold the flag about 10 ft. back from the altar.  From about 15 feet away, ask kids what you have in front of you(the flag and the cross.)  Then  you start walking towards altar.  As you get to place where flag is, tell kids you will salute the flag (put your hand on heart)  because you are an American.  Keep walking all the way up to the altar.  When you get up front, ask what is still in front of you (the cross.)  And what is now behind you(the flag.)  Explain that when (if?) I get to Heaven, the flag will be behind me, but the cross will still be before me.  In other words, everyone in Heaven will be part of God's Family, not Americans, or Mexicans, or Canadians.  In  today's  Bible reading, Jesus says that our country is important because it is our home land, but God is more important than any country on earth.

Faithful Advocacy for Criminal Justice Reform
The Pennsylvania Council of Churches & the Mennonite Central Committee are jointly hosting "Faithful Advocacy for Criminal Justice Reform" on October 28 Harleysville, with a separate lobby day to take place on Nov ember 3. The October 28 session will be held at theSalford Mennonite Church, 480 Groffs Mill Road, Harleysville. We hope to have participants gather at a central location on November 3 to finalize preparations, and then head for meetings with Representatives-but the final logistics will be dependent on lobby day participation and the locations of district offices.
We will be advocating for the passage of "Clean Slate" legislation that would seal the records of many non-violent offenders after a certain length of time with no further offenses, thus making it easier to find employment, housing, and benefits.
     This session will cover:
  • Why this seminar/Why we do advocacy - scriptural/ theological basis
  • What we need to know about the US prison system and restorative justice
  • What we need to know about Clean Slate legislation
  • PA governing structure
  • "Nuts and bolts" of advocacy: how we make our case for Clean Slate with elected officials
  • Instructions for advocacy meetings
  • Team preparation for legislative visits
There is a $20 registration fee to cover the cost of materials and refreshments.

The Lehigh Conference of Churches has developed this interfaith statement and it is our aim to get congregations throughout the Lehigh Valley to support this initiative. The Conference is planning a public signing event on November 19th.  Building up to that date we hope to have a long list of individuals and  faith communities who see respect and partnership as the best way forward for our community.
