NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

August 10, 2018, The New Haven Independent, by E. A. Mcmullen- "A burnished ornate candle holder stands beside a small Buddha balanced on a saffron paperback titled Love. Behind it, a vase erupts with gentle orange tulips. A plastic orange basket supports a slab of hardwood with a small painted alligator's head. More pensive paperbacks share a plastic orange cutting board with another case of tulips, copper cups, an orange, and a candle. Beneath, there is a profusion of orange berries and petals in an orange wicker basket, resting beside a box of markers and pens: all siennas, vermillions, golds. This Titian tableau is an introduction to the idea that, as the title of a new art exhibit at Lotta Studio states, nothing rhymes with orange.  In a partnership between West River Arts and The Range at Lotta Studio , 20 artists are taking part in "Nothing Rhymes with Orange," which has its opening reception on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lotta Studio on Whalley Avenue. It runs through Aug. 24..." Click HERE to comment and read full article.

LOCAL LIT MAKES A SUMMER BLIZZARD
August 9, 2018, The New Haven Independent, by E. A. Mcmullen-"A woman undergoing treatment for cancer strives to connect with her young daughter, even as she seems to be developing a new friendship at her chemo sessions. A middle-aged daughter tries to help her mother, who is suffering from dementia, deal with her impending eviction. A young man going out to buy condoms instead ends up part of the search for a lost car. Three local writers - Jennifer Hudson, Susan Nathiel, and Charles Rafferty - shared these stories with a curious crowd at Lotta Studio on Tuesday at Local Lit at Lotta. The brainchild of Rebecca Fraser, Local Lit is a night of readings from New Haven area writers, coedited and hosted by Fraser and Erin Townsend. The photography studio on Whalley Avenue was transformed Tuesday into an intimate auditorium, with partitions that compartmentalized the house, lectern, and a pair of buffet tables with space for snacking and smaller discussion..." LISTEN TO WEST RIVER ARTS HOWARD EL-YASIN ON "THE FIRST STOP"August 05, 2018, The First Stop Podcast- "Howard is fascinated by materials (shards, fragments, dead skin cells) Americans produce and discard. He's captivated by the way in which these objects reflect our current moment of mass-production and consumption-a condition that allows us to throw away and forget objects of personal significance. In his artistic practice, he seeks to penetrate the material surface of these forgotten human bi-products, revealing the layers of cultural meaning and forensic data contained within them. Howard collects human hair, dryer lint, thrown out banana peels, among other things..." Click HERE to listen to full podcast and HERE to see and learn more about Howards work.
After raising almost 2k for improvements to Edgewood Skatepark last year, artists and skateboarders are now looking to raise money for paint supplies. The supplies will be used by a handful of selected local talent to create murals on the old ramps. Westville artist Caryn Azoff has already donated her time and skills to paint the old pyramid. Now we want to see the rest of the ramps covered in beautiful murals. Our goal is to raise 1,500 for supplies. Any amount helps! If you would like to volunteer to help artist on their mural, please contact [email protected]. Click HERE to donate!
