Message from the Rector
November 20, 2017

Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven will be like this. A man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.' Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.' But his master replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave! Throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'"
 Matthew 25:1, 14-15, 19-26a, 30

Yesterday was the final day of our stewardship campaign for this year. (But remember, stewardship is a year-round commitment.) You have been asked to give a portion of the gifts that God has given you back to him so that his work in the world may continue. The Parable of the Talents reminds us that we are not supposed to hold onto the time, talent, or treasure that God has given us; but rather, we are to take risks with them, offer them to his glory, and allow God to do bigger and better things with them. We have asked you to stretch yourself and give a portion of your time, talent, and treasure to God so that his work can be accomplished. That means taking part in what happens here within our walls so that we can all go out and serve God's people in love and faithfulness, to feed those who are poor spiritually, physically, financially, or otherwise.

Malachi 3:10-12 says, "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. I will rebuke the locust for you, so that it will not destroy the produce of your soil; and your vine in the field shall not be barren, says the Lord of hosts. Then all nations will count you happy, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts."  As you turn in your forms today, when you place them in the collection plate at the Offertory, pray to God to give you the faithfulness to take a risk and bring the tithes into the storehouse, and then watch God multiply the talents and do bigger and better things. Give generously of the little that you have, and the Lord will reward you with abundance.
