"Lord, your best servant is the one who does not expect always to hear the answer he desires but always ends up desiring whatever he hears from you." ~St. Augustine
In this Sunday’s Gospe l, Matthew presents Jesus’ famous line “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's” in response to the Pharisees’ attempts to trip him up. Many readers of this passage tend to interpret this as an endorsement by Jesus that we should be good citizens and pay our taxes but the primary point that Jesus is making is that we, being made in the image and likeness of God (Gn 1:26-27), belong to God. The New Testament understanding of the word image (from the Greek eikon ) went deeper than our own so that to be made in the image of something was to share in the very nature of that something. All humans, being created in the image of God, share in His very nature and we Christians, as followers of Jesus, are called to grow in conformity to that image. Our very lives and all that we are given come from God. As you prepare for Mass this weekend, here is a question for reflection: What in my personal life do I really render unto God? What do I hold back?
