National Breast Cancer Awareness Month BC
October is symbolized with pink ribbons - a reminder that this month is National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Breast cancer touches people in many different ways. Whether you have gone through your own battle or have a mother, sister, friend, cousin that has, it is a diagnosis that has affected many women.

Other than skin cancer,  breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women.

Mammograms are one of the most dependable tools available to diagnose breast cancer and can greatly lower the risks if detected early.

The ACOG (American Congress of Obstetricians & Gynecologists) recommends an annual mammogram starting at age 40.  If you are at higher risk, your doctor may suggest started mammograms a little earlier.   Women at average risk of breast cancer should have screening mammography every one or two years and  should continue screening mammography until at least 75 years.   Beyond age 75 years, the decision to discontinue screening mammography should be based on a shared decision making process informed by the woman's health status and longevity. Most breast cancers are found in women aged 50 or older.

Breast cancer does not often show itself with symptoms, however, symptoms can include  any change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast or underarm.

Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors and no family history. However, if  you, or anyone in your family, has a known risk factor, it could be helpful to monitor changes in your breast cancer genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2).

Although  breast cancer screening  cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat.

Fast Facts About Breast Cancer from the CDC
  • Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease.
  • Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men.
  • Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age.

Improving Thousands of Lives Through Microfinance micro
Providing poor women with meaningful economic opportunity - that's the key to impacting thousands of lives and empowering women to succeed and work their way out of poverty.

The MicroDreams Foundation and its partner, South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Microfinance, invests in these women, and they have witnessed positive impact.

Through the microfinance program, MicroDreams/SPBD provides its members with business skills training, financial education and unsecured credit to start or grow income-generating businesses, improve housing conditions and educate their children.  Initial loans to members are approximately $500.  SPBD also provides savings accounts, insurance, money transfer and other credit products.

Meet Tipiloma.  "If I did not have access to the loans from
SPBD, my  family and I would not have been able to improve our lives or our financial stability," said Tipiloma Kilifi from Tonga.  Tipiloma is a 46-year old exemplary entrepreneur, a wife, a mother of 7, and a grandmother of 5.  These days, she has a lot to be proud of - she runs a growing furniture refurbishment business and is steadily improving her business income.

Tipiloma has an excellent repayment history and is on her 8th loan of TOP 4,500 ($2,050 USD). She uses her loans to purchase the tools, material and inventory necessary to grow her business. She recently sold several refurbished sofas for TOP 1,500 each ($680/USD each).  She is also able to send her youngest child to school and to help pay for her grandchildren's education.

This was not always the case for Tipiloma.  She remembers clearly the days when she could not adequately feed her family nor send her older children to school because she did not have the bus fare.

Making An Impact.
There are so many inspiring women like Tipiloma, and all they need is a nudge in the right direction, training on setting up and managing a small business and easy access to financial help.  The women's initiative, determination to improve their lives and sheer hard work enable them to succeed.

MicroDreams is proud to support the more than 45,000 deserving women microentrepreneurs and is working hard to reach thousands more.

Bottle Hill Day Funbottlehill
The Rubino OB/GYN Group participated in Madison's annual Bottle Hill Day on Saturday, October 7. The event has become a community celebration, drawing between 10,000 and 20,000 people to the heart of Madison every autumn.

Dr. Rubino and our doctors spent time speaking to visitors about breast cancer detection, mammograms and healthy living. In addition to giving away snacks, water and breast cancer information, The Rubino OB/GYN Group also raffled off a brand new Liv Women's Beach Cruiser Bike.

As part of the Madison community, we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to spend the day meeting our neighbors and sharing important information about women's health.

A special thank our event partners, Hilltop Bicycles and World of Rock.
