A Safe Haven for Animals
In this issue:
A Fresh Start for Agnes!

Good to be home!

How are those New Year's resolutions going? Trying to find your healthy weight?
Our friend Ag nes has gained 2 ½ pounds! Do you aspire to learn new things? At 5 years old, Agnes did not know how to climb stairs and was afraid of them. Her new mom taught her "paw by paw" a nd now, as her proud adoptive papa tells
us, "she is killing it!" And what about taking up a healthy new habit? For Agnes, regular tooth brushing is the goal.

Adoption day: the start of something big!
Thanks to  your su pport - and her loving new family - Agnes is doing all these things and more! This fresh start is just what the sweeter-than-honey Irish Wolfhound mix needed aft er a life of neglect.

Rescued from an overcrowded shelter, Agnes arrived at Sonoma Humane Society underweight with a multitude of other health problems. Her body condition suggested that she was a breeder dog who'd had multiple litters over the years.

Katie - our first adoption of 2017!!!

Katie was nervous and shy when she first arrived at the Healdsburg Center. Our volunteers and staff made her feel comfortable and loved but were worried that since she didn't run right up and greet people, she'd have a harder time getting adopted. When they introduced this kind-hearted gentleman to the quiet kitty, he instantly felt a connection. We think these gentle souls make an excellent pair! Congratulations Katie, you have the honor of being our first adoption of 2017 - and most importantly, you've found someone nice to love you!

Lucky - our 2nd adoption of 2017!!!

The first dog to be adopted this year is very Lucky indeed! Lucky came to us from our rescue partners Compassion Without Borders who saved him from life on the streets. The 3-year-old Lab mix had been enduring a severely fractured and infected front leg which, despite efforts to save it, needed to be amputated so the energetic young dog would be able to live a healthy, comfortable life. Three leggedness has not slowed Lucky down one bit. He's happier and bouncier than ever - in fact, he bounced right out the door and into the arms of a loving family as our first dog to go home in 2017!

Cookie's Fortune!

This compassionate woman came in looking for a dog and fell in love with Cookie. She wasn't quite sure if she could take on Cookie's medical needs, but after she left the shelter, she couldn't get Cookie out of her mind! So she came back in, took lots of notes with our behavior and medical experts, and decided to make the leap! Cookie is now being treated like a queen in her new home. Happy trails, Cookie!!!

Good Times at the Healdsburg Center!   Healdsburg

About 200 people attended our Open House last month to help us celebrate our first 6 months since officially opening the Healdsburg Center for Animals! There was mixing, mingling and more than a few animals found families to love: 11 dogs and cats were adopted as a result of the
event - over 50% of our shelter population that weekend!  Redwood Hills Farm and Creamery provided the delicious nibbles for our guests (thank you Redwood Hills!), and Katy Rose and Coco Chanel were on paw to provide their own sweet nibbles at the popular SHS Kissing Booth. All in all, it was a fun way to kick off the holidays and celebrate our wonderful Healdsburg community.  A very special Thank You to our super  team of volunteers who gave their time to make the event such a success!

Trainer's Corner

Last month, we shared tips for teaching your dog to come to you when you called. Getting (and keeping!) your dog's undivided attention is a valuable skill. This month we help you take your training to the next level by adding distractions to strengthen your training efforts. Download the tips here !

Our Training Team is here to help you build a strong relationship with your 4-legged friend.
Kibbles & Bits
KIBBLE BOWL III - Be a part of thekibblebowl equation!
Feeding the 2,700 animals we expect to help this year may seem like a daunting proposition. But, like any other goal, if we break it down into bite-sized chunks it becomes more manageable!
$50 feeds all the animals in our care for half a day, $100 provides meals for an entire day. It all adds up to full tummies and wagging tails!
SHS Volunteers = Heroes With ♥
Our Foster Care  Volunteers not only help individual animals on their journey to adoption, they he lp us expand our shelter's capacity so that we can take in even more animals in ne ed. Last year, SHS fosters opened their hearts and homes to 1,725 animals!
