Thank You To All Who Helped This Advent Season!
|
A big thank you to the Advent Worship Planning Team who worked with
Beth Loughhead throughout the season to make this worship series come alive:
Jan Armstrong,
Pam Constantine,
John DeNardo,
Elly Flowers,
Anna Mei Gubbins, and
Will Popadic and of course the Shining Star,
Barbara Brann-Weir. The team developed the theme, built a stable, authored a soliloquy for The Star, created weekly ornaments for our sanctuary tree, organized candlelighters and provided special music. The church family is exceedingly grateful for all the thought, work and prayer!
And a thank you to everyone who worked Supper and Sweets for Beverly’s New Year. Given the extremely cold weather, the crowd of diners was much smaller than usual, but we still managed to make a little money for the 2018 Mission Trip and, more than that, the church offered warm and welcoming hospitality to those out braving the cold in celebration of a new year. Here’s just one example of what it means when our doors are open:
“Eating dinner in Kira's nursery school gym inside First Baptist Church. This is a neighborhood church with a rainbow flag, transgender pride flag and an Immigrants and Refugees Welcome banner flying from it. I became really emotional eating NYE supper here tonight with Kira and members of the community looking to warm up during NYE festivities. I am beyond grateful that through our quest for a larger home to grow and thrive we are able to stay in Beverly." - Jessica Bendañ

in the family....
- Our sympathy is extended to the family of Jane Wilbur. Jane, wife of Rev. Dr. John Wilbur, who served as minister at First Baptist Church in Beverly from 1958-1983, died on December 23 in Key Largo, FL at the age of 90. Services in memory of Jane will be scheduled for a future date.
- Congratulations to Julie Flowers who was sworn as a Councilor-At-Large for the City of Beverly on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Beth Loughhead offered the Prayer of Invocation at the ceremony and Jack Alves, along with other veterans of the Korean War, was presented an Ambassador for Peace Medal on behalf of the South Korean government. Marie Alves graciously accepted the medal on Jack's behalf as he was unable to attend.

National Conference on Immigration and Deportation
Kent Harrop will be one of three delegates from Essex County attending an education and training conference related to the Trump administration's policy to limit immigration and dramatically increase deportations. Kent is a delegate for Essex County Community Organizing (ECCO), an interfaith group working for justice. ECCO is a subsidiary of PICO, which is hosting this national conference in Sacramento, CA from January 19 - 22. ECCO is covering Kent's expenses.
PICO is a national network of faith-based community organizations working to create innovative solutions to problems facing urban, suburban and rural communities. Since 1972, PICO has successfully worked to increase access to health care, improve public schools, make neighborhoods safer, build affordable housing, redevelop communities and revitalize democracy. PICO helps engage ordinary people in public life, building a strong legacy of leadership in thousands of local communities across America.
The conference will focus on:
* Training in peaceful ways to stand in solidarity with and advocate for those at risk of imminent deportation (rapid resistance network, deportation defense, sanctuary and accompaniment)
* Civic engagement in 2018 midterms on pro-immigrant platform, focusing specifically on no local ICE cooperation
* Developing and investing in Latino and pro-immigrant clergy in the network.
This national conference complements the education process we've been undergoing at FBC. In 2017, First Baptist and the Beverly Multifaith Coalition sponsored three public forums on immigration and deportation. This was complemented by three all-church forums on immigration and deportation for interested persons at First Baptist. We did so in anticipation of promises by the newly elected Trump administration to limit immigration and to move to dramatically deport 11 million undocumented neighbors, including the 1 million DACA recipients whose protected status is set to be rescinded in March. The questions posed were: How does our Christian faith inform how we are to respond to our neighbors at risk? How do we respond to the challenging words of Jesus in Matthew 22: 20 - 22? What do we do if policies of government conflict with the values of our Faith?

North Shore Shelter Fest: Good Music - Good Cause - Good Time
|
Saturday, January 27 from 12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
North Shore Shelter Fest is an all day music festival at FBC to benefit Harborlight Community Partners, the North Shore's largest affordable housing provider and advocate. General admission of $10 gets you full day access-- and all money goes to the cause! Food provided by A&B Burger from 3-7pm. Parking is municipal. Lots located between Cabot and Rantoul.
The headliner for North Shore Shelter Fest is the
Evan Goodrow Band
. Evan Goodrow is a singer-songwriter-guitarist who performs locally, nationally and internationally. He has released 11 studio albums and 3 live albums of soul, funk, blues, rock, and R&B. A Boston native, Goodrow got his start playing jazz guitar and singing acoustic folk music in coffee houses, more than a decade ago.
North Shore Shelter Fest will feature a day of musical entertainment from local and regional artists, including solo acoustic performers and some of the North Shore’s favorite bands. Among them:
- Beverly based Dreamtigers who offer a creative blend of indie rock from their 2014 album “Wishing Well” and other original material.
- The Tree House Charlatans, an eclectic Gloucester-based band that features traditional instruments, a musical saw and a didgeridoo—described by band founder Matt Natti as his “Australian kazoo”—among some of the more unusual instruments onstage.
- Hailing from nearby Boxford and Ipswich, The Band Next Door will deliver a fun set of rock and soul.
- The popular North Shore band, Sweet Escape, brings their mix of originals and covers that blend the essence of classic-rock favorites with inspiration from some of America’s finest woman-fronted country rock and straight-ahead guitar-driven sounds.
- Boxford native Evan Jamieson is a multi-instrumentalist with one of the finest singing voices in the Boston area. He will deliver a mix of music that he has written--and some of his own personal favorite popular songs from which many have drawn inspiration.
- The day’s performances will also include a set from our very own Sarah Schuyler and local musical talent Aisha.
