"Once a group of people were traveling in a boat.
One passenger took out a drill and began drilling a hole under his seat.
The other passengers, quite understandably,
complained that this action might cause the boat sink.
'Why should this bother you?' this man responded,
'I am only drilling under my own seat.'
The others retorted, 'But the water will rise up and flood the ship for all of us!'"
Vayikra Rabbah 4:6
The moral of this story is clear: one person's destructive action may literally drown
the entire community. But we might add that the inverse is true: a single positive
change may transform an entire community. Thus, the alleviation of poverty, even
in the smallest detail, may help the community as a whole to flourish.
Did you know that ...
Children in ethnic minority groups are at much greater risk of living in poverty
than White children. Between 2009 and 2011, about one in three Native
American (39%), Black (38%), and Hispanic (37%) children in Rhode Island
lived in poverty, compared to 24% of Asian children and 13% of White children.

30th Annual Rhode Island Interfaith
Yom HaShoah Commemoration
Sunday, April 27th @ 3:00 pm
Temple Emanu-El
99 Taft Avenue, Providence
| On Sunday, April 27th, Temple Emanuel will host MEMORY, MUSIC & HOPE., the 30th Annual Rhode Island Interfaith Commemoration featuring the choral music of six Rhode Island choirs honoring the memories of the six million Jewish victims and millions of others who perished in the darkness of the Shoah.
The diverse voices of these choirs singing together represents the opposite of what the Nazis tried to snuff out. This Yom HaShoah celebrates our diversity and our collective commitment to understanding, empathy and compassion that is the foundation of peace and human dignity.
Special guest and keynote presenter is Martin Goldsmith, the voice of Symphony Hall at Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Author of "The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany," Mr. Goldsmith will share the emotional tale of his parents' experience in the all-Jewish orchestra in Nazi Germany. He will also speak about the ill-fated journey of his grandfather and uncle on the infamous refugee ship, St. Louis, and their unhappy odyssey through French concentration camps to their murder at Auschwitz, recounted in his new book, "Alex's Wake: A Voyage of Betrayal and a Journey of Remembrance," being released this month.
MEMORY, MUSIC & HOPE will reaffirm our collective responsibility to confront anti-Semitism and discrimination against people of color, different religious traditions and sexual orientation.
The program is free and all are invited to attend. |

Reminder ~ Mishkan HaNefesh Orders
|
Just a reminder that orders for the new machzor - Mishkan HaNefesh - are due. Since the books will not be delivered for a while, you can place your order now and decide on the inscription at a later date.
We will continue to accept orders throughout the coming months so please keep us in mind - a set of prayer books is a meaningful way to honor a loved one or recognize a significant occasion or event.
