Charlie Sifford

June 2, 1922 - Feb 3, 2015

Charlie Sifford caddied for white golf players in

Charlotte NC. In order to learn how to play golf,

Charlie Sifford had to sneak onto the course after

it was closed. He never had lessons, but he taught

himself and came to love the game of golf.

Charlie Sifford was considered the Jackie Robinson

of golf when he broke the game's stringent color

barrier in 1961 by becoming the first black athlete

to compete on the PGA tour.

In 2004 Sifford was inducted into the World Golf

Hall of Fame, and in 2014 President Obama awarded

him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
