"Rejoice in the Lord always."
It was nine year's ago yesterday, that they placed the bible in my hand. It is brown and leather bound and it is surprisingly heavy. It's not heavy, heavy, it just has the right heft to let you know that you are holding something sacred.
That's right I have been a priest nine years now, and holding my ordination bible now leafing through it, reading the inscriptions and reminiscing about this ministry is a powerful and humbling thing.
I remember planning my ordination and thinking about the fact that they give you a bible as part of the service. I painfully underestimated its meaning. I even remember joking to a classmate, "I would hope that you already have a bible by your ordination." Even though most of the bible study I do now is electronic I will say that I think it is important to hold the book in your hands from time to time. Its heft is a reminder that with your faith you carry something of significance.
The Bishop who ordained me began her inscription with the quote above, and to me it is central to our sustained ministry. It is important for us to cherish the relationship we have with God. To feel the weight of that Bible, knowing what it represents, and to read those words of joy is an invaluable reminder that our ministry is both hefty and light at the same time. It is sacred, and it is a joy. I don't say this because I think ordination is the center of ministry, I say this because I believe that we all need time and space to reflect on ministry, and not all of us are privileged to carry the physical reminders. But make no mistake we all share this scripture and our relationship and service is a sacred joy.
Do you have a special Bible or ministry keepsake?
What reminds you that your ministry has heft?
What reminds you that your ministry is a joy?
