The New Mexico State Game Commission met in Roswell on Thursday, November 21, 2019 to vote on the state's proposed changes for the Bear and Cougar Rules.

Wildlife advocates celebrated as the commission voted to ban the heinous recreational trapping of cougars.

The Mountain Lion Foundation has been following this issue for years and most recently  submitted comments  in September 2019, urging the New Mexico State Game Commission to adopt the rule to end the barbaric practice of trapping the state's cougars.

Yet, there is still more left to do to save New Mexico's cougars.

Conservation organizations including the Mountain Lion Foundation, Center for Biological Diversity, Sierra Club, and Cougar Connection received some positive news in our lawsuit against the city of Temecula challenging the approval of the Altair housing development.

This development would endanger the local mountain lion population by disrupting critical wildlife corridors.

When our staff read that a regional open space district was considering the killing of mountain lions to protect cattle, we knew we had to act. In October we packed our bags and headed to the District's Planning and Natural Resources Committee Meeting. Meanwhile, public outrage mounted.

We wrote a letter of opposition, testified during the public comment period, and worked directly with administrators after the meeting to halt consideration of the amendment to the grazing policy which would open the door to killing lions.

The Mountain Lion Foundation fiercely opposed this plan from moving forward, and we were just informed that this option is no longer being considered.
