Students Demonstrate Traditional Ho-Chunk Dances
On Friday, March 23, members of Ho-Chunk Nation visited our area elementary schools to present on the Ho-Chunk culture, as well as to demonstrate Ho-Chunk dance and dress.

During the presentation, Ho-Chunk members described the different dances and dress associated with those dances, and Baraboo School District students performed to traditional Ho-Chunk Pow Wow music. They told the elementary students about Ho-Chunk history and described how several of the students received their Ho-Chunk names, as well as the origin behind those names. At the end of the presentation, the students and staff were invited to get up and join the pow wow fun in a group dance.

We are #Barabooproud of our Ho-Chunk students for demonstrating the Ho-Chunk culture to their peers and teachers in a celebration of diversity in the Baraboo School District!

4K Schedules Two Make Up Days
Dear BELC (4K) Parents and Guardians:

The Baraboo School District includes two additional 4K days of instruction within our annual calendar.  Due to two school cancellations, two early dismissals, and two late starts this year, the District needs to add two more days to the 4K calendar to meet required Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction instructional minutes for the 2017-18 school year.  It is important to us that we give families as much time as possible to accommodate these additional days into personal calendars. So, please mark your calendar for your child to attend 4K on Wednesday, March 21 and Wednesday, April 11.

It is important to note that we may need to add more 4K days if there are additional school cancellations or delays due to inclement weather.  Also, the 4K calendar operates under a different set of rules compared to our K-12 classrooms with regard to instructional minutes. Thank you for your flexibility with these changes and please do not hesitate to contact me if any questions should arise.

Yours in Education,

Dr. Chris Olson, BELC/West Principal

The School District of Baraboo has announced the opening of nominations for the Excellence in Education Award (EIEA) and the Distinguished Elementary Teacher Award (DETA) programs for the 2017-'18 school year.  The EIEA award is sponsored by the BHS Graduating Class of 1956 and the DETA award is sponsored by Mr. Andrew Hauge.  The Class of 1956 and Mr. Hauge have established endowment funds with the Greater Sauk County Community Foundation for the purpose of financing all costs associated with the award programs.  The purpose of the award programs is to recognize and honor outstanding teachers in the Baraboo School District who have distinguished themselves as exemplary teachers and who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and dedication to the young people of the Baraboo community.  The recipients of these annual awards will be announced near the end of the current school year at  special award ceremonies.

The recipients of the awards, who will be chosen by a five-member selection committee of retired teachers, community members and school district officials, will receive a framed honorary certificate and a stipend to be used for a professional development or educational enrichment activity which will enhance the teacher's knowledge, skills and classroom effectiveness.  In addition, the winning teacher's name for the EIEA, which is given to a secondary teacher in the Baraboo School District, will be engraved on a large bronze plaque which hangs in the Media Center of Baraboo High School.  The plaque is inscribed with a tribute to the former teachers of the Class of '56 who, "taught, guided and inspired" them during their years at Baraboo Junior High and Baraboo Senior High School.

To be eligible for these awards a teacher must be:
  • Licensed and certified by the State of Wisconsin
  • Employed as a full-time teacher by the District
  • Planning to return as a full-time teacher in this District for the next school year
The Selection Committee will judge candidates based on the following criteria:

  • Use of initiative, creativity and innovation in teaching techniques
  • Motivational and leadership skills with students and colleagues
  • Involvement in school organizations and activities
  • Involvement in professional organizations, seminars and continuing education
