Stop by Regan's new air plant "bar!"
Tillandsia, or air plants, are bromeliads that can thrive and flourish without soil because they absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves.  The roots are used as anchors to attach themselves to trees, shrubs or rocks which
allows them to be grown vertically. They can attach to anything or nothing at all - thus the name "air plant."
Because tillandsia can adapt to many environmental conditions, they are easy to grow, just provide them with the three most important things they need: light, water and air circulation.
Light
The most important need of tillandsias is bright, indirect sunlight. Bright light or filtered sun is advisable but take care to not place your plant in direct sunlight.  You can also use full spectrum, fluorescent lighting. The optimum temperature range for tillandsias is between 50 - 90 degrees F.  If you want to grow yours outdoors, make sure to protect them from frost.
Water
Thoroughly saturate your tillandsia with water 1-2 times per week; more often in a hot, dry environment (air conditioned or heated); less often in a cool, humid one. Between regular watering in dry climates, it may be necessary to spray mist your plants to increase the humidity.  Tip: if your plant's leaves start to curl, it's time to water.
Air Circulation
Following each watering, plants should be given enough light and air circulation to dry in no longer than 4 hours after watering. Do not keep them constantly wet or moist, as they cannot survive in standing water. Fresh moving air is advisable. Tillandsia grow well in globes and terrariums (not enclosed) but they must be completely dry before they are put back into a container because this could restrict air circulation.
